About The Position

Under the supervision of the University Hospitals Trust (UHT), the Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems critical to patient care and facility operations in a healthcare environment. This role requires experience in healthcare or commercial electrical work, thorough knowledge of applicable codes and regulations, and the ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced, patient-focused clinical setting. The position requires maintaining a mindset and supporting the culture of continuous quality improvement.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as an electrician, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, transformers, switchgear, and low-voltage systems; ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve electrical faults
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals to diagnose and correct electrical deficiencies
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; ability to manage competing priorities and respond quickly to urgent electrical issues in a clinical environment
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; ability to collaborate effectively with clinical staff, biomedical engineers, IT teams, and contractors
  • Proficiency with CMMS or digital work order systems for documentation and scheduling; ability to effectively use two-way radios, tablets (iPad), and computer systems
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • State Electrical Journeyman License required
  • OSHA 10 or 30 Certification required
  • This position supports critical facility functions and may require on-site presence during emergencies, inclement weather, or other operational disruptions.
  • This position will have direct patient contact.
  • Potential for exposure to various healthcare-related illnesses normally associated with a hospital environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Position participates in on-call rotation and must be available to respond to emergency electrical needs outside of normal working hours.
  • This position is subject to compliance with Joint Commission (TJC), CMS, OSHA, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • The colleague in this role is expected to maintain current competency documentation as required by UHT policy.

Nice To Haves

  • NFPA 70E Certification (Electrical Safety in the Workplace) preferred
  • First Aid/CPR Certification preferred
  • Healthcare Facility Electrical Safety Training preferred
  • Experience working in a healthcare or hospital electrical environment with knowledge of Joint Commission Environment of Care standards
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E electrical safety standards and healthcare facility electrical safety protocols

  • Attention to detail to ensure compliance with strict healthcare electrical standards and accreditation requirements

Responsibilities

  • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical wiring, circuits, outlets, panels, switches, and lighting systems throughout the facility
  • Maintains and services backup power systems including generators and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
  • Ensures proper functionality of medical equipment power sources, emergency lighting, and fire alarm systems
  • Executes scheduled preventative maintenance programs on electrical systems to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime
  • Monitors and manages assigned work orders in 1Call Cloud, prioritizing tasks to ensure timely completion and maintaining accurate documentation of all work performed
  • Diagnoses and resolves electrical faults, power fluctuations, and grounding issues
  • Ensures all electrical work complies with OSHA, NFPA, NEC (National Electrical Code), Joint Commission, and applicable local building codes
  • Performs routine inspections of life safety systems including fire alarms and emergency lighting; follows infection control protocols during all electrical work in clinical areas
  • Works closely with biomedical engineers and IT teams to support medical equipment and network systems; keeps accurate records of inspections, maintenance logs, and compliance reports
  • Responds immediately to electrical emergencies that impact patient safety or facility operations
  • Supports disaster preparedness plans, ensuring electrical systems and backup power remain operational during outages or declared emergencies
  • Identifies and implements energy-efficient solutions including LED lighting upgrades and power conservation strategies
  • Monitors and maintains electrical infrastructure in critical care areas such as operating rooms, ICUs, and labs
  • Utilizes communication devices including two-way radios for coordination with team members
  • Uses iPad and computer systems for work order management, documentation, and preventative maintenance scheduling.
  • Prioritizes and completes work orders based on urgency and patient care impact
  • Responds promptly to emergency plumbing calls to minimize downtime and prevent service disruption to patient care operations
  • Utilizes the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to document work orders, maintenance records, and parts usage
  • Maintains a mindset of continuous quality improvement in all electrical maintenance activities
  • Supports organizational culture of excellence by identifying opportunities for process improvements related to electrical systems and energy efficiency
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and provides feedback on electrical systems operations
