About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is seeking candidates for the Electrician position at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. We are looking for someone with an Electrical license or can acquire that license through their experience and/or training. Requirements

  • Possession of a Nebraska Journeyman Electrical license OR Electrical Contractor license or eligibility to become licensed in Nebraska.
  • Per the Nebraska State Electrical Act (Neb. Rev. Statues 81-2101-81-2143), a current Electrical Contractor license is required to obtain electrical permits, and a current Journeyman Electrical License is required to perform electrical installation.
  • Applicants passing the interview must also pass a security background check.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: the medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test.
  • Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and prior experience with electrical system and equipment.
  • Experience with fire alarm systems, fence alarms, door controls, and low voltage wiring.
  • Experience with commercial kitchen and laundry equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Install, alter, and maintain electrical systems, including overhead and underground circuits, de-energized high-voltage equipment, and interior power distribution.
  • Lay out, assemble, install, and test conduit systems, wiring, switches, outlets, panels, lighting fixtures, and other electrical components.
  • Repair and maintain electrical motors, generators, appliances, and specialized equipment such as HVAC units, refrigeration systems, dishwashers, and laundry equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on electrical systems and equipment to identify and correct deficiencies.
  • Estimate time, materials, and costs for work orders and requisition necessary supplies; obtain required permits for electrical work.
  • Clean, repair, and maintain tools and equipment used in the trade.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Instruct and mentor helpers in electrical practices and safety procedures.
  • Advise on selection, ordering, and storage of electrical materials and equipment.
