About The Position

Performs journey electrician licensed level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical circuits and systems. Installs new and repairs existing systems, develops and maintains preventive maintenance schedules, and performs specialized tests. Performs all work in accordance with adopted building codes and uses appropriate safety procedures. This classification may require work in secure facilities and may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. AND two (2) to four (4) years’ experience in the installation and repair of electrical control equipment, lighting fixtures and systems, motors, HVAC electrical systems and other types of electrical equipment.
  • OR, Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.
  • State of Texas Journeyman Electrician License or must be obtained within six (6) months of date of hire.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes, related terminology, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard electrical maintenance and repair methods, materials, tools, equipment and a multimeter.
  • Knowledge of computer equipment to include word processing, spreadsheets, databases and a variety of software packages.
  • Knowledge of business letter writing, grammar and punctuation, and report preparation.
  • Skill in operating and using standard electrical tools and test equipment.
  • Skill in installing and maintaining electrical work.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.
  • Skill in proper and applicable safety practices, procedures and regulations.
  • Skill in working with others, including on a team.
  • Skill in explaining complicated problems in simple non-technical language.
  • Skill in calculating estimates of time, labor and quantities of materials needed.
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to understand and precisely follow both verbal and written instructions and communicate in a concise and effective manner.
  • Ability to work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to reason and make judgments and decisions.
  • Ability to manage time well, perform multiple tasks and organize diverse activities.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to requests for mechanical and electrical system repairs.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs electrical systems.
  • Makes recommendations regarding repair or replacement of system components.
  • Plans, develops, and implements routine and preventative maintenance schedules for mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs electrical motors and generators.
  • Researches and estimates time and materials needed and records time and materials used.
  • Requests for necessary tools, equipment, supplies and materials to perform assigned tasks.
  • Tests, calibrates and repairs electronic and electrical equipment and control systems.
  • Obtains building permits, as required, from regulatory agencies for the construction of new systems.
  • Operates a variety of technical test equipment, such as DC high voltage testers, multi-channel analog recorder, electronic meters and vibration test equipment.
  • Performs specialized testing to diagnose equipment and equipment/circuits.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs electrical motors and generator components.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
