About The Position

Facilities Management's Health System Physical Plant at the University of Virginia has an exciting opportunity for an Electrician or Senior Electrician. This position will be filled at either level based on finalist candidate qualifications. Electricians are responsible for responding to renovation projects and support to maintenance work orders within the Health System Complex. They provide labor and technical knowledge for installation and maintenance of building components and mechanical systems while providing a safe environment. Electricians perform work of moderate difficulty which involves repairing, installing, connecting, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment in buildings. Senior Electricians perform installation, repair, and maintenance trade work on electrical systems and equipment in buildings, including emergency backup systems, alarms, and life-support equipment. Senior Electricians are distinguished by a depth of knowledge and experience. They receive only limited supervision and provide work site guidance to electricians. Most work is performed with little or no direct supervision.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Four years of experience for Electrician; Seven years of experience for Senior Electrician.
  • Journeyman or Master level electrical license
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Selected candidates will be required to complete all required background checks and health screens prior to the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain electrical equipment, components and lighting fixtures with proper wiring and material.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and wiring for Academic and Health System electrical systems.
  • Specify, estimate, and install equipment, wiring, and systems in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
  • Lay out and locate areas to cut or drill holes and openings for installation of sleeve or inserts for passage and support for pipe, fittings, and wire.
  • Respond to emergency requests.
  • Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
  • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code, and The Joint Commission.
  • Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as snow and ice removal and special events setups, as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assume responsibility for laying out and running larger and more complex jobs involving more than one mechanic.
  • Assist supervisor in coordinating daily assignments among different jobs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance repairs and emergency maintenance on electrical equipment.
  • Foster a safe work environment by instructing and monitoring compliance of OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code, and The Joint Commission.
  • Provide direct and provide guidance and mentorship to lower-level electricians.
