About The Position

American University is seeking an Electrician/Fire Alarm Tech to join their Electrical, Fire & Life Safety Systems department. This full-time, regular, non-exempt position is responsible for ensuring a safe, reliable, code-compliant, and functional infrastructure for the university's living and learning environment. The role involves evaluating, maintaining, testing, repairing, and replacing electrical and life safety components, performing corrective and preventive maintenance, and potentially overseeing temporary labor or contractors. The position holder works under general supervision and often independently.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 4 - 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work and function in a wide range of climate conditions.
  • Schedule flexibility to respond and report onsite to emergency calls.
  • Basic Computer and Smartphone usage skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident Alien.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 - 8 years of relevant experience.
  • District of Columbia Journeyman Electrician License.
  • NICET Fire Alarm Certification.
  • Siemens Desigo Modular and/or Siemens Desigo modular voice certification classes.
  • Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding and at heights at 40 feet, and lift 50 lbs.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license with fewer than 2 points.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine testing, inspection, operation and maintenance of campus central Fire Alarm System(s) and Sprinkler systems (wet, dry and special hazard) to ensure that these systems are code compliant, safe and operating as designed.
  • Includes corrective repairs and construction, renovation, improvement projects (e.g. Capital, Deferred Maintenance, Energy projects) support.
  • Performs routine testing, inspection, operation and maintenance of campus Medium Voltage electrical systems, emergency generator and transfer equipment/systems to ensure that these systems are code compliant, safe and operating as designed.
  • Includes corrective repairs and construction, renovation, improvement projects (e.g. Capital, Deferred Maintenance, Energy projects) support.
  • Perform logistical and administrative functions associated with workload.
  • Attend meetings and recommended/required trainings to stay current with codes, departmental procedures, new equipment and to maximize job performance.
  • Provide expert support for Commissioning, Special Events and other duties as assigned.
  • Perform job tasks independently or in conjunction with other parties and to the standard that meets or exceeds DC, as well as National Code compliance guidelines (e.g. NEC, NFPA).
