About The Position

SpaceX’s Environmental Health and Safety Business Operations team is seeking an Electrical Safety Engineer to support electrical safety across production, test, and launch infrastructure. The role develops and maintains programs, procedures, training, metrics, and compliance processes to protect personnel and ensure reliable controls for medium- and low-voltage power systems, manufacturing equipment, ground-support systems, and construction power as operations scale. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of industrial electrical system architecture, NFPA 70E work practices, and hazards associated with switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, generators, temporary power, and equipment in hazardous locations. The engineer will administer and improve the electrical safety program, coordinate electrical studies and risk assessments, support safe design and commissioning, and maintain procedures for operating and responding to electrical systems and events. The role partners with EHS, design, construction, commissioning, operations, contractors, vendors, and utility providers. It is not remote or hybrid, requires relocation if not already local to a SpaceX site, and may require travel, extended hours, and weekend work to support critical infrastructure, construction, commissioning, test, and launch operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, electrical engineering technology, or a related engineering field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in electrical power systems, electrical safety, or industrial electrical operations.
  • Ability to travel and support critical infrastructure as needed.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed to support construction, commissioning, test, and launch operations.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments and comply with site access and safety requirements when on location.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct ownership or administration of an NFPA 70E electrical safety program in an industrial, utility, manufacturing, or other high-hazard environment.
  • Hands-on experience in manufacturing plants, heavy industrial facilities, utilities, or large construction sites, including outdoor or harsh-environment installations.
  • Experience with arc-flash studies, short-circuit analysis, and protective-device coordination using ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of industrial electrical architecture, including utility feeds, substations, switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, generators, paralleling equipment, ATS, and temporary construction power.
  • Familiarity with delta/wye transformers, protective relaying, facility grounding, lightning protection, and power quality.
  • Experience with NEC hazardous (classified) locations and electrical work near flammable or energetic operations.
  • Experience creating and implementing electrical LOTO, switching procedures, and energized electrical work permit processes at active construction or operating sites.
  • Knowledge of OSHA 1910.147, OSHA 1910.269/1910.333, NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, IEEE 1584, and NESC as applicable.
  • NFPA 70E-related certifications such as CESCP, CESW, or equivalent electrical safety credentials.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent EHS credential.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, Revit, or similar electrical design tools.
  • Proficiency with PFMEA, root-cause analysis, statistical process control, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Experience supporting an EHS or operations team with program governance, metrics, audits, training administration, or document control across more than one site.
  • Experience working with utility providers, electrical contractors, and commissioning agents on interconnection, cutovers, and live-facility work.
  • Ability to quickly assess an electrical issue and guide technicians through safe troubleshooting and repair.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, and enthusiasm for the mission of enabling multi-planetary life.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the electrical safety program in accordance with NFPA 70E, including shock and arc-flash protection, energized electrical work permits, approach boundaries, and electrically safe work conditions.
  • Develop, maintain, and control LOTO procedures, switching-order templates, and live-dead-live verification practices for electrical distribution equipment and production and ground-support loads.
  • Coordinate arc-flash hazard analyses and incident-energy studies using IEEE 1584; maintain equipment-labeling standards and define PPE categories, working distances, and approach boundaries for AC and DC systems.
  • Support qualification, training, and auditing of electrical workers as NFPA 70E Qualified Persons; develop training content and tracking for operators, technicians, contractors, and construction partners.
  • Maintain review and approval processes for energized work, electrical switching, and commissioning procedures, and define stop-work criteria for unsafe electrical work practices.
  • Maintain standards for grounding, bonding, equipotential bonding, lightning protection, and power-quality monitoring.
  • Document and maintain generator, ATS, and backup-power transfer expectations for personnel safety during planned and unplanned transfers, including black-start, paralleling, and restoration.
  • Partner with design, construction, and commissioning teams to integrate electrical safety into new builds and expansions, including one-line diagrams, protective-device coordination, short-circuit studies, temporary power, and construction LOTO.
  • Conduct structured electrical-system risk assessments, including FMEA and hazard assessments for medium- and low-voltage distribution, classified hazardous locations, and high-energy equipment; enter results into EHS risk and action tracking.
  • Support investigations of electrical incidents, near misses, shock events, and arc-flash events; track root-cause analysis and corrective actions through closure.
  • Track and report electrical hazards associated with hot work near energized equipment, cooling or ventilation failures, and environmental conditions that degrade insulation, PPE, enclosures, or equipment ratings.
  • Maintain safe operating limits and emergency response procedures for arc flash, shock, power loss, and electrical fires, aligned with site emergency response and operational constraints.
  • Maintain compliance processes for applicable codes and standards, including NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 70B, OSHA 1910 Subpart S, IEEE, IEC, and hazardous-location requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and utility providers to enforce electrical safety requirements during installation, maintenance, interconnection, and repairs.
  • Own electrical safety metrics, audit readiness, document control, and recurring business reviews so EHS leadership can track program health, gaps, and corrective actions.
