About The Position

The Electrical Project Engineer I performs mid-level project management and technical duties. The prospective candidate is well-versed in the roadway and area lighting, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and/or traffic signal design standards and requirements of the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (Illinois Tollway). They mentor and supervise the work of junior project staff. Additionally, this position supports various aspects of project management and electrical design tasks for lighting, ITS, toll collection facilities, renewable energy, electric vehicle service equipment, traffic signals, and other electrical related designs. This candidate prepares electrical models, plans, and schematics; performs electrical and lighting calculations; develops special provisions and estimates of cost; prepares technical reports; assists with or may lead the development of scope and fee proposals for basic to moderate complexity projects; assists with or may lead monitoring of project budget and staff assignments; and performs and may lead adherence to the firm’s quality procedures and QAQC reviews for project deliverables.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution preferred.
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • Typically, 8+ years work experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced engineering skills to complement position goals.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, Bluebeam, and CADD software, specifically the Bentley Suite of products including Open Roads Designer and ProjectWise.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and local and national electrical codes.
  • Proficient in performing roadway lighting calculations using AGi32 software.
  • Experience with relevant design criteria and guidelines of CDOT, IDOT, and Illinois Tollway.
  • Complete state-required competency trainings.
  • Attend job-related seminars and workshops.

Responsibilities

  • Performs engineering design tasks for projects from preliminary to final design.
  • Performs electrical and lighting design calculations.
  • Participates in internal and external project meetings.
  • Coordinates with utilities for new service and/or conflict resolution.
  • Organizes and participates in field surveys and data collection.
  • Provides construction support services including shop drawing reviews, RFI’s, etc.
  • Assists with, or may lead, the development of scope and fee proposals to provide professional design services.
  • Assists with, or may lead, monitoring of project budget and staff assignments.
  • Performs, and may lead, adherence to the firm’s quality procedures and QAQC reviews for project deliverables.
  • Participates in, and may oversee, development of detailed construction plans, special provisions, and estimate of costs for roadway, utility, and electrical for transportation projects.
  • Coordinates design changes and revisions based on internal and external feedback.
  • Communicates regularly with project design staff to coordinate the progress of various assignments and adherance to project deadlines. May act as discipline or project lead. May communicate progress to clients.
  • Independently manages time and schedule to achieve multiple project milestones.
  • Organizes and maintains project files. Leads documentation of correspondence and meeting minutes.
  • Evaluates and applies applicable current engineering standards and federal and/or local requirements to assigned projects.
  • Coordinates and documents completion of quality control reviews throughout the lifecycle of projects.
  • Manages tasks and/or projects of basic to moderate complexity.
  • May act as the main point of contact with clients or project leads (on projects led by other disciplines).
