About The Position

IMEG is hiring an Electrical Project Designer in Urbandale, IA to lead electrical system design for low to moderate complexity building projects and support larger, higher complexity work in collaboration with senior staff. This role focuses on engineering analysis, design, and implementation oversight of electrical systems for buildings. You will help plan and monitor project budgets, schedules, and design progress, mentor less experienced staff, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. The team supports commercial and institutional work, with a strong higher-education focus and experience on classrooms, science buildings, student housing, and health-science projects, advancing high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required
  • 3 years of experience minimum required, 4 preferred, in the building design consulting industry
  • 7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting or construction industry
  • Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications
  • Strong technical and analytical skills including knowledge of principles relating to circuit theory, electromagnetism, power systems, and electronics as they relate to electrical systems design for buildings
  • Proficient with industry standard engineering software and tools including lighting photometric calculation software such as AGI, Elum Tools, Visual Lighting, or other; power system analysis and design software such as SKM/PTW, Easy Power, or other; and proficiency in the use of Building Information Model software and CTC Revit Add In Tools
  • Knowledge of Illumination Engineering Society (IES) Standards
  • Proficient with energy compliance software such as ComCheck; Adobe or Bluebeam Revu; the use of reference material resources such as NFPA Link, TechStreet, MadCAD, and Facility Guideline Institution (FGI)
  • Proficiency in Smart Engineering Design Assist (SET) Tools within Revit for electrical calculations, coordination, properties, etc. Knowledge of Master Specification editing and software such as eSPECS
  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to travel up to 10% with occasional overnight stays

Nice To Haves

  • Engineering In Training (EIT) Certification preferred
  • Associates degree, or certificate, in Building Information Modeling (Building Information Model) or Engineering preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical system design for low to moderate complexity building projects.
  • Support larger and higher complexity projects in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Perform engineering analysis and develop detailed designs, specifications, and calculations using engineering software and tools in accordance with code requirements and IMEG standards.
  • Work directly with clients to understand project needs, gather requirements, communicate technical information, and maintain professional relationships.
  • Lead project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and design documentation efforts to support project deadlines and objectives.
  • Monitor design progress, including percent complete and fee expended, and document client decisions and instructions.
  • Analyze engineering problems and develop practical, efficient solutions with senior engineers and consultants.
  • Conduct in-process design reviews and apply quality control processes to help ensure designs meet IMEG quality standards, industry standards, and client requirements.
  • Train and mentor less experienced staff and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Identify potential project issues, seek guidance from the Project Manager, support bidding and construction administration, and prioritize safety throughout the work.
