About The Position

Silent-Aire, a division of Johnson Controls, is a global leader in owner equipment manufacturing (OEM) dedicated to providing custom solutions for data center customers. Our product line includes large-scale equipment such as air handling units and modular data centers. We offer multiple shift options to fit your lifestyle: Rotating Day Shift (Continental) Monday to Thursday – Night Shift, Weekend Night Shift (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The Electrical Pre-Apprentice supports the installation and termination of conduit, wiring, cabling, electrical equipment, panels, sensors and basic control components under supervision. This role assists with the assembly and fabrication of control panels and systems, including the installation of interlock wiring and participation in wiring verification and checkout activities in accordance with drawings and procedures. The Electrical Pre-Apprentice also supports the testing of installed, repaired or modified equipment to verify proper operation and assists with identifying and ordering replacement equipment, parts and supplies.

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of electrical fundamentals, including voltage, current, resistance and simple circuits.
  • Knowledge of basic lockout/tagout principles and electrical isolation.
  • Awareness of electrical safety practices and hazard recognition.
  • General awareness of the purpose and role of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and applicable standards.
  • Ability to identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions or quality concerns.
  • Familiarity with reading basic drawings, schematics and work instructions.
  • Knowledge of proper housekeeping and material handling practices.
  • Basic math skills applicable to trade work (measurement, layout, material counts).
  • Ability to work effectively under direct supervision and apply feedback to improve skills and performance.
  • Willingness to learn and develop foundational electrical skills, including maintaining awareness of relevant codes, safety practices, tools and evolving electrical technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure production environment while effectively managing multiple competing priorities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of, or enrollment in, an electrical pre-apprenticeship, trade readiness or related technical training program is considered an asset.
  • Mechanical, construction or industrial labour experience is considered an asset.
  • Introductory knowledge of electrical tools, materials and equipment used in manufacturing environments is an asset.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical testing is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation and termination of conduit, wiring, cabling, electrical equipment, panels, sensors and basic control components under the direction of a Journeyperson or Supervisor.
  • Perform pre-apprenticeship-level electrical tasks in accordance with applicable drawings, specifications and work procedures.
  • Assist with testing installed, repaired or modified electrical equipment to verify proper operation and report findings to supervision.
  • Support routine maintenance activities, including cleaning, lubrication and basic upkeep of electrical equipment as required.
  • Assist in identifying electrical materials, tools and equipment requirements and support the preparation of material take-offs.
  • Monitor electrical parts and materials usage and report any shortages, discrepancies or material issues to supervision.
  • Participate in preventative and predictive maintenance planning by assisting with schedule preparation and documentation under supervision.
  • Assist with lockout/tagout (LOTO) and equipment isolation procedures in accordance with company safety programs.
  • Safely use and maintain basic hand tools, power tools and electrical test equipment under supervision.
  • Ensure proper care, storage and basic inspection of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, logs and basic documentation related to work performed, maintenance activities and materials used.
  • Demonstrate readiness and commitment to meeting the requirements of an Electrical Apprenticeship program through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentorship opportunities to develop foundational electrical skills and prepare for progression into a registered apprenticeship.
  • Support quality control and inspection readiness by ensuring work meets drawings, specifications and established standards.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Silent-Aire safety program standards and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.
