Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer

Kunin Technologies•Chattanooga, TN

About The Position

Kunin Technologies is hiring an Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer for its Capital Projects team. The engineer will own the electrical and instrumentation scope for a group 14 metal chlorination plant being designed, guaranteed, and commissioned overseas for an industrial partner. The plant will process metal-bearing feeds through chlorination, purification, and hydrolysis to produce electronic-grade metal, with Kunin’s ion-exchange media recovering metal from dilute process liquors. Bench and mini-pilot process development runs are planned in Chattanooga from December 2026 to May 2027; the plant is to be built from modular skids alongside civil works, with commercial operation targeted for the first quarter of 2028. The partner will build and operate the plant, while Kunin owns the process, design package, performance guarantee, and operating-team training. Using the control philosophy and equipment list in the basic engineering package, the engineer will produce the electrical and instrumentation basis of design, including the load list, single-line diagrams, hazardous-area classification for chlorine and hydrogen chloride service, earthing and power quality, instrument index and I/O list, and safety instrumented system requirements. The role also includes specifying skid-mounted motor control centers, drives, panels, and instruments; reviewing the contractor’s detailed design; and supporting energization, loop checks, interlock testing, and commissioning. The engineer will collaborate with the Mechanical Process Engineer, Senior Process Engineer, VP of Capital Projects, and the partner-country contractor. This is a founding role on the Capital Projects team. After the first plant reaches its project gates, the engineer is expected to execute design and delivery work on two to three projects in parallel and, as the team grows, lead the electrical and instrumentation engineering team across those projects. The role is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with travel to fabricator shops and the partner’s site, including extended site stays in the fourth quarter of 2027. Extended hours and weekends are frequently required to support critical milestones.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • At least 5 years of electrical and instrumentation engineering experience on chemical, hydrometallurgical, or specialty-gas capital projects.
  • Experience delivering at least one basic engineering (FEED) package to an EPC contractor.
  • Experience designing power distribution and motor control for an operating plant.
  • Experience specifying instruments and control systems that were installed and commissioned.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous-area design and functional safety, including IEC 60079 and IEC 61511.
  • Working knowledge of corrosive-service instrument selection.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or an equivalent tool.
  • Ability to review 3D plant models for cable routing and instrument access.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Creative problem-solving ability spanning power, controls, safety systems, and field execution.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the electrical basis of design, including the load list, single-line diagrams, hazardous-area classification, earthing, power quality, and electrical scope of the Class 3 estimate.
  • Develop the instrument index, I/O list, control philosophy, and safety instrumented system requirements with process engineers through HAZOP and SIL review.
  • Specify, evaluate bids for, and conduct factory acceptance of skid-mounted motor control centers, variable frequency drives, control panels, and field instruments.
  • Review the contractor’s detailed electrical and instrumentation drawings, cable schedules, and installation for alignment with process intent, IEC codes, and local codes.
  • Support energization, loop checks, interlock and safety-system testing, and commissioning at the partner’s site.
  • Deliver electrical and instrumentation scope for front-end studies for future plants in parallel with delivery of the first plant.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and process engineering colleagues, the VP of Capital Projects, and the partner-country contractor.
  • After the first plant reaches its gates, execute design and delivery work across two to three projects in parallel and, as the team grows, lead the electrical and instrumentation engineering team across projects.
