Electrical Engineering Manager - Digital Hardware Design

Astranis•San Francisco, CA
•$180,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Astranis is hiring an Electrical Engineering Manager to lead delivery of custom software-defined radios for its satellites. The manager will oversee hardware development from architecture definition through board design, testing, and qualification, while leading and developing a team of electrical engineers. The role focuses on highly complex PCB assemblies with integrated compute, high-speed I/O, data converters, and power distribution. The manager will architect ultra-high-speed mixed-signal systems for efficient, flexible communications payloads and integrate them with the spacecraft. The position also calls for continuous technical innovation and industry expertise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a similar technical field.
  • At least 8 years of professional experience in mixed-signal and high-speed digital hardware design, such as FPGAs, high-speed data converters, SerDes and high-speed serial links, networking, or JESD204C.
  • At least 8 years of PCB-level hardware design experience from concept through production, including schematic capture, layout, bring-up, and characterization.
  • Proven leadership experience in project management, mentorship, and people management.
  • Passion for hands-on hardware development and working in a fast-paced environment.
  • U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or qualifying refugee/asylee status, as required by U.S. Government space technology export regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building and overseeing the full design cycle of FPGA-based software-defined radios for GEO space telecommunications satellites.
  • Experience delivering custom hardware spanning signal-chain design, FPGA integration with high-speed data converters, custom power and clocking solutions, and support for RTL development.
  • Experience designing and analyzing satellite communications payloads, including radiation effects in FPGA-based systems or complex digital devices.
  • Strong background in mixed-signal system performance measurement, design validation, and debugging, including EVM testing, spur analysis, and multi-carrier measurements.
  • Experience simulating high-speed digital protocols using Ansys SIwave, Keysight ADS, or similar tools.
  • Experience with Altium or similar EDA tools for high-density PCB design.
  • Strong background in digital communications theory and measuring radio nonidealities such as HD, IMD, IQ imbalance, gain ripple, and group delay distortion.
  • History of leading small teams, mentoring employees, communicating effectively, and making high-impact decisions under uncertainty.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of electrical engineers designing software-defined radios for space-based signal processing.
  • Oversee and manage design workflows for complex PCB assemblies with integrated compute, high-speed I/O, data converters, and power distribution.
  • Architect ultra-high-speed mixed-signal systems for communications payloads and integrate them with the rest of the spacecraft.
  • Oversee the complete hardware development lifecycle, including architecture definition, board design, testing, and qualification.
  • Promote technical innovation and maintain industry expertise to ensure competitiveness.

Benefits

  • Equity package via incentive stock options.
  • Company-subsidized healthcare.
  • Disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement planning.
  • Flexible paid time off.
