About The Position

The NYCDOT seeks an Electrical Engineering Intern to join the Traffic Management Center unit within the Traffic Operations divisions. The unit operates 24/7, including holidays and weekends. The selected candidate will be assigned to a specific shift and, under general supervision, will perform highly technical engineering work. This includes monitoring and troubleshooting problems related to the maintenance of 13,900 traffic signals, working with maintenance contractors via radio communication to troubleshoot traffic signal failures and restore proper operations critical for traffic flow and public safety. The role also involves troubleshooting wireless communication for traffic signals, coordinating with service providers and subcontractors, checking the status and health of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment, preparing reports for management and maintenance shops, and providing technical support. The intern will utilize the agency's video surveillance system and other vehicle detection technology to manage traffic incidents citywide, monitor work zones and severe weather conditions, and coordinate responses with first responders and other city and state agencies. The position may involve working different shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Serving permanently in the title of Electrical Engineering Intern, or having filed for the Electrical Engineering Intern, Exam #6047.
  • A baccalaureate degree in electrical or electronic engineering from an accredited college.
  • OR a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in electrical or electronic engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting problems related to the maintenance of 13,900 traffic signals.
  • Working with maintenance contractors via radio communication to troubleshoot traffic signal failures to restore proper operations.
  • Troubleshooting the wireless communication used in conjunction with traffic signals and coordinating with the service provider and their sub-contractor.
  • Checking the status and the health of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment.
  • Preparing and providing reports to management and in-house maintenance shops.
  • Providing technical support.
  • Utilizing the agency video surveillance system and other vehicle detection technology tools to manage traffic incidents citywide.
  • Monitoring work zones and severe weather conditions that may impede traffic flow.
  • Coordinating the response to traffic incidents with first responders and other city and state agencies in the metropolitan region.
