About The Position

SMUD is seeking a junior or senior Electrical Engineering student for a year-round internship opportunity. The intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the maintenance of hydroelectric facilities within the Upper American River Project (UARP). This project includes 11 reservoirs and 9 powerhouses, providing a significant portion of SMUD's electricity needs. The role involves collaborating with experienced engineers and skilled trades, such as mechanics, electricians, and electrical technicians, in a natural setting. The internship offers a chance to apply academic knowledge in a practical environment and learn about clean energy and innovation. The position requires travel to Pollock Pines, CA, with an option to report to SMUD's East Campus in Sacramento for shorter days or when commuting is not practical due to class schedules. A cover letter is required, explaining interest in power generation, field work, and hands-on collaboration, and why the candidate will be successful. Requirements

  • Must be a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at an accredited college or university.
  • Must be in a declared curriculum with a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) emphasis.
  • Must be a Junior or Senior in college.
  • Must be majoring in Electrical Engineering.
  • Must be willing to perform work offsite in hydroelectric power stations.
  • Must be able to commute to SMUD Offices in Sacramento/Pollock Pines, CA when requested.
  • Must not have any relatives working at SMUD.
  • Must complete and pass at least 12 undergraduate units OR 8 graduate units.
  • Must receive at least a 2.0 GPA.
  • Must not require sponsorship from an employer.
  • Must provide a cover letter explaining interest in power generation, field work, and hands-on collaboration, and why the candidate will be successful.

Responsibilities

  • Support activities related to the Upper American River Project (UARP), SMUD's hydroelectric development.
  • Collaborate with experienced professionals and skilled trades such as mechanics, electricians, and electrical technicians.
  • Perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in alignment with their educational disciplines.
  • Locate sources of information; collect and organize data.
  • Make computations and analyze data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action.
  • Develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs.
  • Develop written, graphical and/or oral reports.
  • Assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision.
