About The Position

At Turtlebox, we build rugged speakers designed for demanding environments. We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to own the entire electrical systems development process, from initial concept to final production. This role requires a hands-on individual comfortable with both design tools and bench work, including prototyping, board rework, and lab debugging. The position involves setting the electrical direction, making key decisions, and ensuring product quality. As the company grows, this role will evolve to include directing external development partners and building in-house capabilities. This is an opportunity for someone who wants significant ownership, to shape an engineering team, and contribute to a beloved product.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of Electrical Engineering experience in consumer or embedded products (BSEE or higher required).
  • Proven track record of owning products from concept through mass production and sustainment.
  • Strong experience in battery systems, PCBA design, and Bluetooth systems.
  • Deep understanding of power systems, power management, and embedded electrical architecture.
  • Strong knowledge of component selection, schematics, and PCB layout considerations.
  • Current working knowledge of the PCBA component market, including sourcing alternatives and lead times.
  • Proficiency in Altium Designer or similar (schematic capture, layout, and design review).
  • Experience with firmware troubleshooting and system-level debugging across hardware, firmware, and manufacturing environments.
  • Experience managing or directing external development partners, including setting acceptance criteria and holding them accountable.
  • Experience developing validation plans and executing reliability testing.
  • Experience designing for EMI/EMC compliance in mixed-signal systems.
  • Experience supporting quality teams with electrical failure analysis and corrective action.
  • Working knowledge of audio systems (amplifiers, DSP, and signal path) as they relate to electrical design decisions.
  • Self-directed and decisive, comfortable owning the electrical function with full accountability.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Consumer electronics experience strongly preferred.
  • Consumer audio experience is a major plus.
  • Experience with rugged or outdoor products.
  • Experience with international manufacturing partners, particularly in Southeast Asia.
  • Experience with regulatory and certification processes (FCC, CE, etc.).
  • Startup or small team experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own electrical system architecture from concept through production, making key decisions and component selections.
  • Take full technical ownership of PCBA, battery systems, power management, and audio signal path development, working with external partners and building in-house capability.
  • Define and maintain electrical design standards, best practices, and documentation.
  • Design for durability, waterproofing, and reliability in harsh environments (temperature, moisture, vibration, impact).
  • Validate designs in real-world environments and translate field failures into design improvements.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with external development partners, setting priorities, reviewing designs, and ensuring quality and schedule adherence.
  • Translate product requirements into clear technical inputs and acceptance criteria for external partners.
  • Work cross-functionally with product, mechanical, firmware, and operations teams, including collaborating with Design Engineering on ECAD–MCAD integration.
  • Act as the internal subject matter expert for all electrical decisions.
  • Debug complex system-level issues across hardware, firmware, and connectivity, supporting Bluetooth performance and power optimization.
  • Own electrical validation strategy and test plan development, including reliability, performance, and safety testing.
  • Analyze test data and drive design improvements.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for suppliers and contract manufacturers, leading electrical development through builds (EVT, DVT, PVT).
  • Own electrical readiness, risk identification, and issue resolution through production ramp.
  • Support DFM, yield improvement, production scaling, and quality teams with failure analysis and corrective actions.
  • Prototype and build circuits by hand, using lab equipment fluently for troubleshooting.
  • Build functional prototypes to validate designs before committing to fabrication.
  • Own problems end-to-end until fully resolved.
  • Take on responsibilities beyond traditional EE scope and help build engineering processes and systems.
