Electrical Engineer, Hardware Reliability (Build Reliability)

SpaceX•Hawthorne, CA
•$115,000 - $170,000

About The Position

The Build and Hardware Reliability organization is an inclusive, interdisciplinary team focused on the reliability of flight components and production assemblies. The Electrical Engineer, Hardware Reliability collaborates with design, test, and manufacturing teams, guiding avionics hardware from design through production and operation. The role uses data to identify factors affecting reliability and supports quality objectives throughout design and development to improve manufacturing, test, and flight reliability. It involves investigating technical problems at both detailed and vehicle-wide levels and working hands-on in the office, factory, and lab.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering.
  • At least 1 year in a manufacturing, quality, and/or design engineering role; student project team or internship experience qualifies.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with enthusiasm for the team's innovative spirit and mission to improve reliability in cutting-edge technology.
  • Hands-on experience designing and/or troubleshooting PCBAs.
  • Experience supporting production and test of complex electromechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of quality tools and methods, including Lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action, APQP, metrology, PFMEA, control plans, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Commitment to applying a lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with design, test, and manufacturing teams throughout product development and production to ensure the reliability of avionics parts, including controllers, RIOs, sensors, RF, power systems, solar arrays, and wire harnesses.
  • Track yield and test or inspection escapes, and ensure past failures and lessons learned are incorporated into new product introduction.
  • Develop, implement, and validate lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products and processes, using objective criteria and consistently meeting quality goals.
  • Monitor product and process performance during production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools.
  • Conduct build quality reviews to verify design intent is achieved and communicated, identify risk-reduction opportunities, simplify designs and processes to improve manufacturability, and collaborate with integrated product teams to address high-impact and recurring non-conformances.
  • Investigate production, test, and flight failures; identify and mitigate immediate and underlying root causes to quantify and reduce risk and improve design and process reliability.
  • Use schematics, test equipment, and inspection processes to conduct structured electrical root cause analysis of failures during development and production, informing design and manufacturing changes.
  • Perform gage repeatability and reproducibility studies to validate product-acceptance test systems.
  • Contain suspect or known non-conforming products and guide quality inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers in quarantine and rework activities.
  • Support shop-floor continuous improvement and development of a lean, autonomous production system by creating standard rework and repair guides, removing redundant or unnecessary inspection, and improving control and optimization of critical processes.

Benefits

  • Potential eligibility for long-term incentives in the form of company stock or long-term cash awards.
  • Potential discretionary bonuses.
  • Ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Comprehensive medical coverage.
  • Vision coverage.
  • Dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
