About The Position

SpaceX’s Build and Hardware Reliability organization is an inclusive, interdisciplinary team focused on the reliability of flight components and production assemblies. The Electrical Engineer, Hardware Reliability collaborates with core groups across SpaceX to guide hardware from design through production and operation. The role uses data to understand reliability drivers and supports quality objectives in design and development to improve reliability in manufacturing, test, and flight. It combines detailed technical investigation with system-level prioritization and hands-on work in the office, factory, and lab. The position focuses on avionics parts, including controllers, RIOs, sensors, RF, power systems, solar arrays, and wire harnessing. The engineer supports product development and production, investigates failures, validates test and inspection processes, and helps improve manufacturing quality and reliability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering.
  • At least 1 year in a manufacturing, quality, and/or design engineering role; student project team or internship experience qualifies.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as needed.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills and enthusiasm for the team’s innovation and mission of improving reliability in cutting-edge technology.
  • Hands-on experience designing and/or troubleshooting PCBAs.
  • Experience supporting production and test of complex electromechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of quality tools and methods, including Lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action, APQP, metrology, PFMEA, control plans, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Commitment to applying a Lean approach to quality without compromising safety or reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with design, test, and manufacturing teams during product development and production to ensure the reliability of avionics parts.
  • Track yield and test or inspection escapes, and incorporate past failures and lessons learned into new product introduction (NPI).
  • Develop, implement, and validate lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products and processes, using objective criteria and consistently meeting quality goals.
  • Monitor product and process performance during production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools.
  • Conduct regular build quality reviews to verify that design intent is achieved and communicated; identify risk-reduction opportunities and simplify designs and processes to improve manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with integrated product teams to drive improvements and address high-impact and recurring non-conformances.
  • Investigate failures in production, test, and flight; identify and mitigate immediate and underlying root causes to quantify and reduce risk and improve reliability.
  • Use schematics, test equipment, and inspection processes to conduct structured electrical root cause analysis of failures and inform design or manufacturing changes.
  • Perform gage repeatability and reproducibility studies to validate test systems used for product acceptance.
  • Contain suspect or known non-conforming product and guide quality inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers on quarantine and rework activities.
  • Support shop-floor continuous improvement and development of a lean, autonomous production system by creating standard rework and repair guides, removing redundant inspection, and improving control and optimization of critical processes.

Benefits

  • Potential eligibility for long-term incentives in the form of company stock or long-term cash awards.
  • Potential discretionary bonuses.
  • Ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Medical, vision, and dental coverage.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Other discounts and perks.
  • Up to 3 weeks of accrued paid vacation.
  • 10 or more paid holidays per year.
  • Paid sick leave pursuant to company policy and applicable law.
