Electrical Engineer (Early Career)

Noble Machines, Inc•Sunnyvale, CA
•$120,000 - $150,000•Onsite

About The Position

Noble Machines builds multipurpose robots to support human workers in dangerous, difficult jobs across industries including construction, mining and energy. The company seeks an early-career Electrical Engineer to design, build and bring up embedded electronics and internal tools used by its robots and engineering team. The engineer will work closely with senior electrical engineers and mechanical, firmware and software engineers on a small team, initially owning smaller boards and test hardware end to end and taking on larger subsystems over time. Recent graduates are welcome.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field, completed by the start date.
  • 0–3 years of full-time experience; recent graduates are welcome.
  • At least two hardware internship or co-op terms, or equivalent hands-on work on a student engineering team.
  • At least one personally designed PCB, including schematic and layout, that the candidate brought up, using Altium, KiCad, OrCAD or similar.
  • Experience with microcontrollers and common interfaces such as I2C, SPI and UART, and enough C to read and debug firmware.
  • Comfort working in a lab with oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies and soldering equipment.
  • A design portfolio containing schematics, layouts, project photos or write-ups, and an explanation of the candidate’s personal contribution.
  • Clear written communication and a habit of documenting work.
  • Ability to work onsite in Sunnyvale five days a week.

Nice To Haves

  • Hardware internships at robotics, automotive, aerospace or consumer electronics companies.
  • Participation in Formula SAE, robotics, rocketry, solar car or similar student teams, especially with ownership of the electrical system.
  • Power-electronics or motor-control projects, such as designing a motor driver, DC/DC converter or battery charger.
  • Experience building a test fixture or test automation in Python.
  • Exposure to CAN, Ethernet or USB hardware design.
  • Experience integrating sensors such as IMUs, encoders, current sensors or force sensors.
  • Experience taking a board through a contract manufacturer.

Responsibilities

  • Design schematics and multilayer PCB layouts for embedded boards, test fixtures and debug tools, with senior-engineer review.
  • Take boards through fabrication, assembly and bring-up, and resolve issues discovered during the process.
  • Select and integrate microcontrollers, sensors, power circuits and interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, CAN and USB.
  • Define firmware requirements for new boards and work with the firmware team to bring them up.
  • Design and build test fixtures, bring-up stations and diagnostic hardware for the engineering team.
  • Support motor-control and power-electronics work on robot subsystems.
  • Design, analyze and test wire harnesses for robots and test equipment, including selecting connectors and wires, coordinating routing with mechanical engineers, checking voltage drop and current capacity, and conducting continuity and functional tests.
  • Debug hardware in the lab using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies and electronic loads.
  • Run validation tests, document results and help convert failures into design fixes.
  • Work with PCBA vendors on quotes, assembly questions and part substitutions, and maintain current BOMs and documentation.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware and software engineers to integrate hardware into the robot.
