About The Position

True Anomaly is hiring a Subsystem Lead to own the avionics subsystem on one or more space vehicle programs. The role is accountable for delivering a subsystem that meets requirements, cost, and schedule from program start through on-orbit operations. The lead owns the subsystem’s technical solution—including design, analysis, build, test, and delivery—and works with engineers and technicians assigned by the Avionics functional team. The role is the subsystem’s point of contact for program leadership and other subsystem leads. Program Systems Engineering provides system-level requirements, architecture, and systems engineering; the Subsystem Lead partners with that team and owns work within the subsystem boundary. The position includes translating subsystem allocations into specifications, managing verification and interfaces, planning and reporting schedule and technical performance, and tracking risks. The lead presents the subsystem at design and test reviews, manages supplier technical work, coordinates hardware build and test, leads anomaly investigations, and supports vehicle integration, environmental testing, launch-site operations, commissioning, and on-orbit anomaly response. Decisions within subsystem requirements, cost baseline, and schedule are made by the lead; decisions crossing those boundaries are escalated with recommendations. Work is performed through company change-management, anomaly-resolution, and configuration-control processes. The role is onsite full-time in Centennial, Colorado, or Long Beach, California; occasional remote work is possible. Travel to company sites, suppliers, test facilities, and launch sites is required as needed. The successful candidate must be able to maintain or obtain TS//SCI clearance and meet applicable U.S. Government space technology export-control eligibility requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing, building, and testing avionics or electrical hardware for flight, space, or defense programs.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals and sufficient depth to work credibly with digital, FPGA, power (EPS), RF, and harness engineers.
  • Hands-on ownership of a subsystem or major assembly through at least one full lifecycle phase: design, build, test, or operations.
  • Experience writing and managing subsystem specifications, ICDs, and verification matrices.
  • Experience leading design reviews and test readiness reviews.
  • Experience leading hardware anomaly investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective action.
  • Experience working with suppliers, including SOWs, technical evaluations, and acceptance-data review.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with engineers, program leadership, and customers.
  • Ability to maintain or obtain TS//SCI clearance.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. Government space technology export-control eligibility requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Experience as an RE, IPT lead, CAM, or subsystem lead on a spacecraft program.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft avionics architectures, including flight computers, data handling, power distribution, RF, and harness.
  • Experience with space environmental testing (TVAC, vibration, shock, and EMI/EMC) and space-grade parts selection and derating.
  • Experience supporting launch, commissioning, or on-orbit operations.
  • Experience working with government or defense customers and interpreting defense specifications.
  • Experience in a fast-paced startup or similarly dynamic hardware environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own avionics subsystem design, analysis, build, test, and delivery within allocated technical and cost targets; conduct trades and escalate when requirements or cost targets cannot be met.
  • Translate subsystem allocations into subsystem and component specifications with the program Systems Engineer and Chief Engineer; maintain the verification matrix and close verification items through qualification and acceptance.
  • Establish and maintain interface control documents (ICDs) with adjacent subsystems and resolve interface issues with their leads.
  • Provide subsystem milestones to the program integrated master schedule (IMS), plan supporting work, update status weekly, and flag schedule slips with recovery options.
  • Report subsystem technical performance measures, including mass, power, thermal dissipation, cost, and margin.
  • Create and maintain the subsystem risk register for technical, supply, schedule, and cost risks, and raise risks that threaten program success.
  • Present the subsystem at PDR, CDR, TRR, and tabletop reviews, supporting design choices with analyses such as worst-case, thermal, radiation, and derating analyses.
  • Write technical sections of supplier statements of work, review proposals, support vendor selection with Supply Chain, review acceptance data before shipment, and witness supplier testing.
  • Coordinate with engineers and technicians building and testing hardware; remove blockers; lead anomaly investigations and corrective actions with Quality; and decide on retest, rework, or use-as-is with the Chief Engineer.
  • Support vehicle integration, environmental testing (TVAC, vibration, and shock), launch-site operations, commissioning, and on-orbit anomaly response; feed lessons learned into subsequent designs.
  • Make day-to-day decisions that do not affect subsystem requirements, the cost baseline, or delivery schedule, and communicate decisions to the Chief Engineer, Program Manager, and functional leaders; escalate decisions that cross those thresholds with a recommendation.
  • Follow company processes for change management (ECO/ERB), anomaly resolution, and configuration control.

Benefits

  • 100% company-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents, with HSA/HRA options.
  • Flexible Time Off for exempt employees; accrued PTO of up to 25 days for non-exempt employees; 12 paid holidays; parental leave; and sick leave.
  • Daily catered lunch and unlimited snacks for in-office employees.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Fitness reimbursement.
  • Dog Fridays.
  • Equity participation as part of the total compensation package.
