Electrical Engineer - Future Forward

Intuitive•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

As an Electrical Engineer in Intuitive’s Future Forward group, you will help improve and extend robotic product lines by developing innovative electronics for Intuitive systems. You will design, implement, and test complex mixed-signal printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), integrate them into complete surgical robot solutions, and support their progression through human use and product release. The role works cross-functionally with engineering teams and requires familiarity with mixed-signal PCBA design and integration, board- and system-level troubleshooting, and medical-device development processes. The position covers the electronic board design lifecycle for robotic surgical systems, from architecture and component selection through prototype development, verification, qualification, and manufacturing transfer. You will collaborate with contract manufacturers, embedded software and FPGA teams, and other stakeholders, and contribute technical expertise to product quality, safety, and regulatory processes. Designs must meet clinical, statutory, environmental, quality, and safety requirements and comply with the company’s design-control processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an adjacent technical field with at least 4 years of experience; or a master’s degree with at least 3 years of experience; or a PhD with at least 2 years of experience.
  • At least 4 years of focused, hands-on mixed-signal board-level design experience from architecture through production.
  • Experience with mixed-signal PCB design, embedded-system design, and PCBA design for harsh environments.
  • Strong foundations in analog and digital electrical engineering, high-speed design and signal integrity, MPSoCs, FPGAs, MCUs, and DC/DC power converters.
  • Hardware development experience in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment.
  • Familiarity with product development lifecycle phases, including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Hands-on engineering skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Understanding of component selection criteria and design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills across levels and organizations.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with software and FPGA teams on architecture, processor and FPGA selection, and interface definition.

Nice To Haves

  • Hardware development experience in medical surgical or therapeutic products.
  • Familiarity with OrCAD for schematic design.

Responsibilities

  • Design or modify PCBAs, including contributing to electrical architecture, selecting components, designing schematics, performing component placement, defining stack-ups, and overseeing PCB layout.
  • Coordinate with contract manufacturers to support timely delivery of prototype and production PCBAs.
  • Bring up and debug prototypes and work with embedded software teams to test board functions.
  • Represent Electrical Engineering on cross-functional teams developing next-generation robotic surgery products.
  • Select methods and integrate them into designs that meet product requirements.
  • Develop, implement, test, and document solutions according to clinical, statutory, and environmental requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise to resolve design, field, and manufacturing issues.
  • Develop prototypes to support future product development.
  • Provide technical support to stakeholders on electrical engineering concepts.
  • Support quality and regulatory processes.
  • Ensure medical-device designs meet product quality and safety requirements and comply with design-control processes in the Quality Management System.
  • Collaborate with software and FPGA teams on architecture definition, processor and FPGA selection, and interface definition.
