About The Position

Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer, Senior to support its Energy Supply operations, with a strong emphasis on mechanical systems, power generation equipment, maintenance engineering, reliability, and capital project execution. This position performs advanced, independent professional engineering work requiring the application of complex engineering principles, sound technical judgment, and knowledge of current industry practices and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will provide engineering expertise in support of Energy Supply facilities, plant operations, equipment reliability, maintenance programs, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives. Responsibilities may include monitoring equipment performance, troubleshooting complex mechanical and operational issues, developing repair strategies, supporting maintenance planning and execution, participating in equipment commissioning, evaluating technical issues, developing engineering recommendations, and coordinating work across multidisciplinary teams. This role is well suited for an experienced engineer who can independently manage complex technical assignments, support the reliability and performance of critical generating assets, and coordinate maintenance and capital improvement activities from initial evaluation through implementation and commissioning. The position may also provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and serve as an engineering resource to plant operations, maintenance personnel, contractors, and other technical stakeholders. The Electrical Engineer, Senior classification is the third in GRU’s three-level engineering career series and incorporates the competencies and responsibilities associated with the Engineer, Associate and Engineer classifications. GRU may fill multiple positions from this posting. This position may also be underfilled at a lower engineering classification based on the selected candidate’s education, experience, and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited educational institution, Mechanical Engineering is preferred
  • Six (6) years of experience in the area of assigned engineering responsibility.
  • Appropriate co-op or internship time and/or an advanced degree in engineering, business or other relevant courses (e.g. planning, public administration, etc.) of study may be recognized for up to one year of experience.
  • May require supervisory experience.
  • Valid Florida Class E Driver's License required
  • Valid State of Florida Engineering Intern License
  • Valid Engineering License issued by Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE)
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent and possess a proficient knowledge of software utilized in the engineering discipline as required by the individual department. Proficiency in specialized software may be required.
  • Perform as a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of the assignments.
  • Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.

  • Independently perform most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Technical guidance is not normally required except in unusual or highly complex problems. Managerial approval is typically required on proposed plans for projects. May have responsibility for a functional/technical area or multiple projects. May oversee projects involving outside engineering firms. Consult with management regarding sensitivity to political and strategic issues.

  • Has contact with other engineering personnel within the organization and with customers, contractors, suppliers, and other agencies requiring relationship building skills and persuasiveness. The incumbent may represent the City in external organizations, task forces, and committees as appropriate. The incumbent receives limited guidance by management in addressing customer requirements that involve negotiating skills and diplomacy. Ability to work effectively with elected officials, charter officers, department heads, and representatives of other agencies, other city employees, and the general public.
  • Provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others. May provide supervision or coordination of work of one or more subordinate engineers, engineering technicians, and other support personnel who assist in specific discipline. Manage multiple projects or a major project often with unique or controversial issues, which have an important effect on major programs. Possibly receive oversight by management. Customarily assume responsibility for performance management when subordinates are assigned. May receive minor oversight by a more senior engineer / utility designer that is limited in form to concept review as opposed to task delineation and calculation checking. Ability to guide and coach engineers / utility designers and other engineering personnel.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering economic analysis to projects or system components. Review the economic analysis and engineering recommendations prepared by others. Determine appropriate data required as well as analyze and present complex data. Direct the data gathering tasks of Engineer / Utility Designer 1, 2 and 3.
