Electrical Engineer Manager

Precision Optics Corporation IncSouth Portland, ME

About The Position

Precision Optics Corporation designs and manufactures custom electro-optical imaging systems for OEM customers in medical, defense, and industrial markets, integrating precision optics, miniaturized electronics, and embedded software into complete, purpose-built imaging products. The work is genuinely novel: systems that leave this facility operate at the boundaries of miniaturized imaging technology and are engineered from the ground up for each application. The Electrical Engineering Manager is the senior technical authority for all electronic aspects of POC’s imaging systems at the Portland facility. This is not a purely supervisory position. The role carries direct individual contributor accountability alongside management responsibility: the manager architects electronic subsystems for new imaging programs, executes technical work personally on critical-path deliverables, and leads a growing team of engineers. The right candidate is a builder who also develops other builders. Current technical priorities include real-time, low-latency FPGA-based image signal processing for endoscopic and other miniaturized camera platforms, CMOS sensor integration across multiple interface standards, and expansion of electrical engineering capability to support a growing multi-market program portfolio.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a team or project leadership role with direct accountability for technical outcomes on a significant electronic imaging development program
  • Demonstrated experience designing real-time, low-latency electronic video systems; relevant backgrounds include medical imaging, defense or military electro-optical systems, industrial machine vision, or professional video applications
  • Working knowledge of FPGA-based development for video and image processing applications, with the technical depth to evaluate architectural tradeoffs, direct engineering work, and make informed design decisions across programs; direct RTL development experience a plus
  • Experience integrating CMOS image sensors across multiple families and interface standards including MIPI CSI-2/D-PHY, LVDS, and parallel DVP; demonstrated ability to evaluate and characterize sensor performance against application requirements
  • 5+ years of PCBA design experience including high-speed layout with controlled impedance and differential pair routing; proficiency in Altium Designer is a strong plus; rigid-flex design experience preferred
  • Working proficiency in C and/or Python for hardware characterization, test automation, or algorithm prototyping
  • Experience working within a formal regulated development environment such as ISO 13485, AS9100, or equivalent; familiarity with IEC 60601 electrical safety requirements is a significant plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to present technical content to customers, program stakeholders, and senior leadership

Nice To Haves

  • Direct RTL development experience a plus
  • Proficiency in Altium Designer is a strong plus
  • Rigid-flex design experience preferred
  • Familiarity with IEC 60601 electrical safety requirements is a significant plus

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of individual contributor electrical engineers; set technical direction, conduct performance reviews, and contribute to recruiting and headcount planning
  • Architect the electronic subsystem of new imaging programs from first principles, establishing system partitioning, signal chain design, interface standards, power architecture, and FPGA resource allocation as integrated decisions within the broader electro-optical system
  • Develop real-time, low-latency video capture and processing systems across medical, defense, and industrial applications; own the full electronic design from sensor interface through system output
  • Guide and review FPGA-based image signal processing development including pipeline architecture, noise reduction, debayering, and image enhancement; maintain direct technical authority over FPGA architecture decisions across programs
  • Direct CMOS image sensor selection and integration across multiple families and interface standards; oversee evaluation and characterization of sensor performance against program requirements
  • Execute and direct schematic capture and PCBA layout for miniaturized, high-density electro-optical assemblies; own DFM and design-for-assembly processes from layout through production transfer
  • Execute and direct bring-up and debug of complex mixed-signal electronic systems including high-speed serial video interfaces, power integrity, signal integrity, and EMC compliance
  • Define electrical design specifications and product requirements; maintain design history file documentation in conformance with applicable quality management system requirements
  • Evaluate and select components, sensors, FPGAs, and ASICs; develop and manage semiconductor and component supplier relationships
  • Provide schedule and cost estimates for new development programs; identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies
  • Author and review technical documentation, test procedures, and design packages for accuracy and regulatory conformance; develop and maintain assembly processes, fixture requirements, and manufacturing strategies
  • Represent engineering with OEM customers, contract manufacturers, and semiconductor suppliers in design reviews, requirements development, and qualification activities
