Electrical Engineer III

Blue Origin•Huntsville, AL

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Engines business unit, which designs, develops, manufactures, and tests engines and propulsion systems. As a member of a small, high-impact team, the Electrical Engineer provides end-to-end engineering solutions for integrating, installing, commissioning, maintaining, and operating electrical machines and their associated power systems. Working with minimal direction, the engineer develops approaches to complex problems, collaborates with technical and operational stakeholders, and contributes engineering judgment across disciplines supporting successful integration efforts. Relocation is available, and the position requires travel up to 30% of the time, including field support at test and installation sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience commissioning and troubleshooting electrical machinery and power systems.
  • Experience with electrical testing and diagnostics.
  • Demonstrated preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Familiarity with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and de-energization procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience working in dynamic, high-energy operational environments.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Proficiency using AI tools in an engineering workflow.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

  • Experience designing for hazardous (classified) areas, such as Class I, Division 2.
  • Experience with industrial power system environments.
  • Hands-on experience supporting systems engineering, configuration management, or quality processes.
  • Experience authoring commissioning procedures and work instructions, and developing processes.
  • Working knowledge of basic networking systems and industrial communication protocols, such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards, such as NEC, NFPA 70E / arc flash, and IEEE and NEMA machine and protection standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, analyze, and implement electrical engineering solutions involving medium-voltage power systems, protection, excitation and voltage regulation, instrumentation, controls, and integration across these areas.
  • Plan, lead, and execute commissioning of electrical machinery and associated power systems.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and electromechanical systems in the field and on the test floor, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Interface with operations, manufacturing, test, suppliers, and external partners to gather requirements, communicate technical direction, and align on solutions.
  • Interpret and apply power system studies—including short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, and load flow—to equipment design, settings, and safe operation.
  • Provide technical oversight of suppliers.
  • Support preventative and corrective maintenance of electrical systems, trend condition-monitoring data, and identify and support procurement of critical spare parts.
  • Use AI-enabled engineering tools to improve analysis, documentation, and design efficiency.
