Electrical Engineer 1

RYOBI•Anderson, SC

About The Position

Designs and verifies digital and analog control systems for power tools, including both hardware and firmware, with a focus on battery management systems (BMS). Prior BMS experience is not required, but is a significant benefit. The role includes circuit schematic and PCB layout development, component selection, bill of materials (BOM) generation, and firmware architecture and development. The engineer also creates production testing documents and develops and executes verification tests and other formal steps required before production. The position calls for a can-do attitude, willingness to learn new technical skills, and comfort working across both software and hardware. The ideal candidate is comfortable with hands-on work such as PCB rework and using measurement equipment, while also approaching problems through theoretical methods such as simulation and calculations. Strong time-management skills and a production-focused mindset are required. Experience or interest in power tools and home improvement is a plus.

Requirements

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or an equivalent degree.
  • Internship and/or co-op experience.
  • Knowledge of the C programming language and some experience with microcontroller programming.
  • Ability to set up and perform hardware tests using common test and measurement equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies.
  • Ability to explain technical issues to technical and non-technical audiences in email, PowerPoint, and meetings.
  • Ability to travel to Asia as necessary; travel is typically 0% and may be up to 5%.
  • Can-do attitude and willingness to learn new technical skills.
  • Comfort working in a mixed software and hardware setting.
  • Strong time-management skills and a production-focused mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • Embedded battery management system experience, particularly with Li-Ion batteries.
  • Experience with power electronics design and testing, such as motor control or AC/DC and DC/DC conversion.
  • Experience with SPICE modeling software such as LTSpice or Multisim Pro.
  • Proficiency with PCB layout and development tools, particularly Altium.
  • Experience with firmware design and architecture and collaborating on a large software project.
  • Experience with and interest in power-tool products and home improvement.
  • Comfort with hands-on work such as PCB rework and measurement equipment, as well as theoretical methods such as simulation and calculations.

Responsibilities

  • Design electronic circuits for digital and analog power-tool control systems, particularly battery management systems.
  • Design and verify hardware and firmware for control-system circuitry.
  • Develop circuit schematics and PCB layouts, select components, and generate bills of materials.
  • Develop firmware architecture and firmware.
  • Create production testing documents.
  • Create and execute verification testing and other formal pre-production steps.
  • Work with component manufacturers to stay informed about new technologies and help influence their direction.
  • Use hands-on and theoretical approaches to address engineering problems.

Benefits

  • Full ownership of new projects and the opportunity to see products on store shelves.
  • Collegial atmosphere in a small group of electrical and embedded engineers.
  • Formal onboarding for two years.
  • Optional leadership development program.
  • Mentorship.
  • Continuing education reimbursement.
  • Technical and managerial promotional tracks.
  • Support for test equipment and materials.
  • On-site gym and cafeteria.
