Your work environment at EXP We are looking for a skilled Electrical Distribution Designer with specialized experience in both overhead and underground systems to join our team. In this role, you will play a critical part in delivering infrastructure solutions for Toronto Hydro projects. Working collaboratively with our engineering and project management teams, you will produce high-quality design packages—covering underground cabling, pole lines, and service connections—that strictly adhere to Toronto Hydro standards and Ontario utility codes.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • A minimum of 3 years in utility design with a strong focus on the full lifecycle of electrical distribution projects.
  • Advanced skills in MicroStation (2D/3D) and AutoCAD are essential. Experience navigating Toronto Hydro’s internal GIS and proficiency in SAP (material ordering, inventory tracking, labor work orders) is required.
  • Deep knowledge of Toronto Hydro Standard Design Practice (SDP) and construction standards is mandatory.
  • Extensive experience with civil utility projects, including duct bank installation/rerouting, cable chambers, underground tunneling, secondary service installations, splice/tap boxes, switchgear foundations, and customer-owned underground structures.
  • Proficiency in non-linear pole loading analysis using SpidaCalc (verifying conductor inputs, guying, and pole capacity). Ability to perform manual and software-based cable pulling calculations (e.g., Pull Planner) and voltage drop calculations.
  • Thorough understanding of City of Toronto Municipal Consent Requirements (MCR), including full stream and short stream cut permits.
  • Knowledge of Toronto Regional Conservation Authority (TRCA) requirements.
  • Experience with Metrolinx permitting (WPM, General Arrangement plans).
  • Experience securing Park Access Agreements for work on City of Toronto parklands.
  • Familiarity with Hydro One permitting processes and technical submissions.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed plan and profile drawings, cable routing layouts, trench cross-sections, and pole line designs. Produce comprehensive civil and electrical deliverables including schematics, equipment layouts, and detailed construction drawings.
  • Prepare full construction packages, including accurate Bills of Materials (BOM) and cost estimates. Compile and modify record and as-built drawings based on field data reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure all designs meet Toronto Hydro specifications. Perform necessary technical calculations (including pole loading and voltage drop) and evaluate equipment options.
  • Identify requirements for and assist in obtaining necessary permits. Review technical documentation, surveys, and studies to ensure design constructability and accuracy.
  • Calculate inverted elevations in congested corridors to create accurate profiles.
  • Correlate utility records, field notes, and survey files to verify the location of existing underground and aerial assets in accordance with Subsurface Utility Engineering standards.
