About The Position

This position is responsible for the design of residential, commercial, industrial, overhead and underground electric distribution facilities. The role involves meeting with various stakeholders, researching and acquiring necessary documentation like easements and permits, assessing load requirements, creating designs and material lists, reviewing and correcting as-built information, and editing GIS data. The designer will also investigate customer complaints, prepare cost estimates, oversee projects to ensure they meet specifications, budget, and timeline, and record survey measurements. Additionally, the position requires coordination with multiple departments, adherence to safety policies and codes, and performing routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and tools. The role may require working more than 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in a field related to electric utility distribution and power design OR HS Diploma or equivalent AND Three years of directly related work experience
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Report that comply with PEC policy
  • Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, entering data or processing information
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and the National Electric Safety Code requirements relevant to distribution design issues
  • Knowledge of mathematics
  • Knowledge of the cooperatives distribution design and construction practices
  • Knowledge of utility service guidelines and policies
  • Knowledge of power system components, functions, ratings and limitations
  • Knowledge of roadway, security and other lighting design practices
  • Knowledge of Utility Center
  • Knowledge of specification book and the cooperative’s line extension policy
  • Knowledge of PEC Safety Manual
  • Skilled in time management
  • Skilled in prioritizing and managing changing priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to listen and understand information verbally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Meet with members, developers, contractors, consultants, and government entities to discuss electric power supply processes and procedures.
  • Meet as required for the completion of distribution projects.
  • Research, acquire, record, prepare, and verify required overhead or URD easements.
  • Notarize easements as necessary per customer request.
  • Research to ensure customer deed information is correct and up-to-date.
  • Check ROW easements.
  • Obtain ROW permits if called for.
  • Obtain road crossing permits.
  • Assess load requirements to size correct transformer.
  • Notify warehouse of material/transformer requirements.
  • Notify Meter shop of CT or Trans Socket requirements.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Create designs and materials lists for overhead and underground distribution facilities.
  • Review as builds and correct as needed.
  • Edit GIS to ensure accuracy and connectivity.
  • Draw new distribution facilities within the Global Information System.
  • Call locates to ensure equipment can be installed at location.
  • Request vegetation clearing or trimming from Vegetation Maintenance Department.
  • Investigate customer complaints, determine the problem, and recommend solution(s).
  • Send joint use letters.
  • Inspect Overhead and URD line extensions.
  • Prepare cost estimates for new line extensions and relocations.
  • Oversee project(s) to ensure completion to specifications, on time, and within budget.
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawings, sketches, and plats.
  • Utilize surveying instruments such as prisms, theodolites, and measuring equipment, chain saws, and assorted tools.
  • Coordinate with right of way, construction crews, department planners, and pole contacts departments.
  • Interpret, adhere to, and enforce the company safety policy, the Line Extension Policy, and the National Electric Safety Code.
  • Prepare small scale distribution designs with minimal supervision.
  • Provide proper and routine maintenance and care for assigned vehicles and tools.
  • Operate PEC vehicle(s) for business purposes in accordance with applicable Federal, State, local law and PEC policies and procedures.
  • Maintain driver eligibility through appropriate valid Texas Driver’s License and driving record in accordance with PEC policy.
  • Maintain the security of confidential information.
  • Stay abreast of advances in technology.
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
