About The Position

Central Moloney has been a trailblazer in manufacturing distribution transformers and transformer components since 1949. Our ISO 9001-certified legacy is built on delivering top-notch products, on-time reliability, and pushing the boundaries of excellence. Join us in powering a future resonating with Central Moloney's strength. The Electrical Designer I will be responsible for the electrical design and development of distribution transformers in compliance with IEEE, CSA, and customer specifications. This role requires a sound foundation of electrical engineering design principles as they pertain to the electrical requirements unique to transformer applications. This role involves preparation and review of detailed designs and calculations in accordance with applicable standards and manufacturing constraints.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or diploma in Drafting, Electrical Engineering Technology or a related field (preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience in a designer role in an engineering or manufacturing environment of electrical distribution equipment, preferably transformers.
  • Proficiency in engineering design and analysis tools (e.g., CAD, FEA, simulation software, etc.) as well as productivity and ERP software.
  • Proficiency in distribution transformer design, associated manufacturing processes, and application of applicable industry standards such as ANSI, IEEE, IEC, CSA.
  • Sound understanding of electrical wiring and transformer operating principles (basic understanding of sheet metal and tank fabrication a plus)
  • Basic project management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with an ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa.
  • Ability to work under supervision and take guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate transformer electrical configurations including high and low voltage winding arrangements (e.g., delta, wye, series/parallel), impedance, and insulation coordination for voltage classes up to 35 kV.
  • Check electrical designs against material characteristics and performance criteria, such as: Core and Load losses Impedance and voltage regulation Flux and current densities Dielectric withstand and BIL
  • Define and specify major components such as: Tap changers and Dual Voltage switches Bushings, arrestors and fusing Terminal arrangements and type, etc. Accessories such as PRDs, gauges, etc.
  • Review and prepare, as applicable, technical design documents including: Connection diagrams Nameplate data Tap changer/switch wiring Bill of materials for electrical components
  • Interpret and apply relevant industry standards (e.g. IEEE, CSA, and DOE) to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in design reviews and root cause analysis of production or design issues.
  • Contribute to standardization of transformer designs and development of design tools, templates, and best practices.
  • Stay updated on evolving industry standards, participating in technical events as required.
  • Support certification and testing requirements, such as losses, dielectric, short circuit and impulse testing.
  • Coordinate with mechanical design to ensure compatibility of bushing locations, terminal clearances and component layout configurations.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, test, and quality teams to resolve non-conformances, implement engineering changes, and validate design improvements.
