About The Position

The Small Airborne Effectors Division within Leidos’ Kinetic Effects Business Area designs, develops, tests, and produces small to medium airborne missiles, unmanned vehicles, and payload effectors for defense customers. The division is seeking an entry-level Electrical Design and Integration Engineer for its Huntsville, Alabama campus. The role supports design, integration, and test programs related to missile systems and unmanned aircraft, with hands-on work across avionics, integration, test, mission support, and field operations in development, prototype, and production environments. The engineer will support advanced technology programs throughout the product lifecycle, from research and development through full production. Work includes developing hardware, firmware, and software solutions; designing and integrating electrical systems; testing and troubleshooting in laboratory and field environments; and working with multidisciplinary teams, customers, suppliers, and manufacturing teams to transition prototype hardware into deliverable products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: electrical system design; electrical circuit design and simulation; hardware and software interface design and integration; software development; or hardware/software troubleshooting and debugging in a lab and/or field environment.
  • Experience with constructive collaboration within and among multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time to support testing and other events.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship required.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of printed circuit board layout design.
  • Experience with parts selection, electrical schematic capture, wiring harness design, and surface-mount technology (SMT) manufacturing.
  • Experience with sensor instrumentation such as acceleration, velocity, position, and/or pressure.
  • Experience developing and testing flight hardware.
  • Experience with radio communication links and GPS/INS systems.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, integration, and test.
  • Experience with requirements-based design and test planning.
  • Experience with technical leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Design, fabricate, analyze, and integrate hardware, firmware, and software solutions to address customer challenges.
  • Test and troubleshoot hardware, firmware, and software in laboratory and field environments.
  • Design electrical and/or software architectures and integrated systems for real-time, mission-critical systems, including flight systems, sensors, ground vehicles, and ground control systems.
  • Collaborate and communicate with project managers, customers, and team members to determine and develop hardware and software requirements.
  • Contribute to hardware and software architecture decisions based on customer performance requirements, schedule, and cost constraints, including build-versus-buy tradeoffs.
  • Support electrical system design, avionics design, payload integration, analog/digital/PCB hardware design, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, system debugging, and systems engineering.
  • Work independently as part of a broader multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Collaborate with project teams to develop innovative solutions to complex problems and products across a broad range of applications.
  • Coordinate with the purchasing department and outside board and cable shops to procure hardware.
  • Test and assemble hardware in a laboratory environment.
  • Work with manufacturing teams to transition prototype hardware into a deliverable product.
  • Travel to support testing and other events, as needed, up to 10% of the time.
