About The Position

AWC is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to help expand its in-house, UL-listed low-voltage power systems manufacturing program. The role engineers Siemens TIASTAR Motor Control Centers (MCCs) and enclosed variable frequency drive (VFD) panels, creating complete designs and helping establish standard designs and engineering practices for the program. This hands-on position combines design work, customer and sales support for proposals, and time on the manufacturing floor. The engineer ensures designs meet UL 845, UL 508A, NEC, and customer requirements, and that released packages can be built by production without engineering rework. The role also supports assembly, testing, factory acceptance tests, and the development of EPLAN standards. The position offers an opportunity to help build AWC’s power systems manufacturing program and develop standard MCC and enclosed VFD designs and engineering practices. Potential growth paths include application engineering leadership, technical leadership, or engineering management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent industry experience.
  • At least 3 years designing low-voltage power distribution or motor control equipment.
  • Experience with EPLAN Electric P8 or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Ability to read and interpret industrial electrical specifications, one-line diagrams, and control schematics, and write clear exceptions to them.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, including Articles 409 and 430.
  • Clear communication with customers, sales, and the manufacturing team.
  • Willingness to spend time on the shop floor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing MCCs, especially Siemens TIASTAR with SIMOCODE motor management relays.
  • Knowledge of UL 845 and UL 508A, including SCCR calculations.
  • Application, sales, or project engineering experience on MCCs, switchgear, or drives.
  • Experience building EPLAN templates, macros, or parts data.
  • Experience with an OEM, panel builder, systems integrator, or switchgear manufacturer.

Responsibilities

  • Design complete low-voltage MCC lineups, enclosed VFD panels, replacement buckets, and retrofit assemblies to customer specifications.
  • Produce one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, bills of material, and nameplate schedules in EPLAN Electric P8 as complete production-ready packages.
  • Develop standard MCC bucket designs and enclosed VFD configurations to shorten lead times and support repeatable production.
  • Select and apply circuit breakers, motor starters, overload relays, VFDs, soft starters, control transformers, and other power and control components.
  • Ensure designs comply with UL 845, UL 508A, the NEC, short-circuit current rating requirements, and AWC’s listing requirements.
  • Review customer specifications and one-line diagrams for proposals, and prepare technical clarifications and exceptions.
  • Help sales and estimating scope and price engineered-to-order work, and participate in customer calls on larger projects.
  • Support fabrication and test technicians during assembly, testing, and factory acceptance tests, and process engineering changes.
  • Work with AWC’s EPLAN Standards Engineer to build templates, macros, and parts data.
  • Spend time on the manufacturing floor to help ensure designs can be handed off to production and built without engineering rework.

Benefits

  • Employee ownership through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
  • Competitive salary and performance incentives.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • 401(k) with company contributions.
  • Paid vacation and company holidays.
  • Ongoing manufacturer and technical training.
  • Opportunity to work alongside industry-leading manufacturers and customers.
  • Opportunity to help build and grow an expanding low-voltage power systems manufacturing operation.
