About The Position

This is the advancing level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressing complex and varied. Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy. The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization. The Oconee Nuclear Station (ONS) CDE team manages the capital engineering change portfolio at the ONS site in Seneca, SC. The ONS CDE Electrical Team is seeking to fill the position of Electrical Design Engineer III or Senior Electrical Design Engineer.

The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
Electrical Design Engineer III: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
Electrical Design Engineer III: A Master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S engineering degree
Electrical Design Engineer III: Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience
Electrical Design Engineer III: 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
Senior Electrical Design Engineer: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Senior Electrical Design Engineer: A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
Senior Electrical Design Engineer: Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
Senior Electrical Design Engineer: 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
This role requires the ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
State registration as a Professional Engineer.
Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Proficient in principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry, specifically the nuclear industry.
Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.
Working level knowledge of ETAP software program.

Responsibilities

Develop the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for engineering design changes that include but are not limited to AC power systems, DC power systems, Large AC motors, Transformers, Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, Protective Relaying, Voltage Regulators, Breakers, etc.
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
Conducts engineering and related studies; completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
Maintains accurate records and files.
