About The Position

The Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, integrating, and validating machine electrical systems, electro-hydraulic controls, embedded controls software, and vehicle communication networks for off-highway equipment. The role owns electrical and controls architecture from concept through production release and works cross-functionally with mechanical, hydraulic, manufacturing, procurement, service, and supplier teams to deliver robust, safe, serviceable, and compliant machines. Jarraff by Prinoth provides specialized right-of-way maintenance, land clearing, and tree care equipment, including Jarraff All-Terrain Tree Trimmers, Mini-Jarraff Urban Tree Trimmers, and T-Rex Carrier Vehicles. Its facilities in St. Peter, Minnesota, support vegetation management products offered in North America. The role contributes to product solutions focused on customer safety, performance, and profitability. This is a full-time role, Monday through Friday, with stated hours of 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (40 hours per week); some flexibility in hours is allowed, with the possibility of some hybrid work. The position operates in office, engineering, and shop environments, with occasional exposure to noise, hydraulic fluid, and outdoor field conditions during prototype and field testing. It reports to the Director of Engineering and R&D, has no direct supervisory responsibilities, and serves as a coach and mentor while supervising outside contractors working on electrical systems.

  • Candidates with a Mechanical Engineering degree must demonstrate substantial electrical-controls experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Danfoss PLUS+1, Parker IQAN, and/or CODESYS, and working knowledge of embedded C/C++.
  • Working knowledge of SAE J1939 and CAN bus, including physical and application layers.
  • Working knowledge of Siemens NX / Teamcenter and IGE-XAO or equivalent harness design tools.
  • Proven ability to perform system-level troubleshooting on complex electro-hydraulic machines.
  • Excellent technical communication across departments.
  • Communication proficiency.
  • Customer/client focus.
  • Technical capacity in electrical systems, controls, CAN/J1939, and embedded software.
  • Problem solving, analysis, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Results-driven approach.
  • Microsoft Office tools proficiency.
  • Ability to talk and hear regularly, climb on and operate off-highway machines for testing and troubleshooting, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Define and document machine-level electrical, electro-hydraulic, and control system architecture, including controller selection, I/O allocation, CAN network maps, and power distribution.
  • Develop machine-control software and/or define, document, and verify software requirements for outside suppliers.
  • Design and configure CAN and SAE J1939 networks between ECUs, engines, transmissions, telematics, and displays.
  • Use 3D software such as Siemens NX to integrate electrical controls, harnesses, and sensors into machine models, and manage revisions, bills of materials, and release workflows in Siemens Teamcenter.
  • Design production-ready wire harnesses using IGE-XAO and AutoCAD or DraftSight, including schematics, from-to lists, connector tables, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Select wire gauges, connectors, seals, and terminations suited to off-highway environments, and coordinate design considerations with harness suppliers.
  • Lead electrical and controls troubleshooting for prototype and production machines.
  • Work with Engineering Technicians to develop and execute validation plans, document results, and resolve issues before production release.
  • Support testing, customer visits, and warranty investigations; analyze test and field data and propose design improvements, ECRs, and ECOs.
  • Produce and maintain electrical and controls requirements, interface documents, FMEAs, validation records, and technical-file content supporting applicable SAE J1939, machinery safety, CE/EU regulatory, and EPA-related requirements.
  • Manage multiple development projects concurrently and work with outside suppliers and other business units.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite and standard engineering computing tools, learn new development software, and attend training as required to maintain competency.
  • Coach and mentor other positions in the department and supervise outside contractors working on electrical systems.
  • Climb on and operate off-highway machines for testing and troubleshooting.
