Electrical Controls Engineer

Axiota US•Wamego, KS

About The Position

The Electrical Controls Engineer is the plant-wide owner of control systems and instrumentation, with responsibility across the system lifecycle—from concept and design through installation, commissioning, validation, maintenance, and continuous improvement. The role supports manufacturing operations, product quality, and reliable process data capture, and offers entry-level candidates the opportunity to grow into technical ownership of plant infrastructure. The engineer develops and maintains PLC and HMI programs; supports the design and commissioning of new control equipment and instrumentation; maintains plant data acquisition and historian systems; and performs risk assessments, control verifications, and instrument calibration reviews. The role also assists with equipment and control-system validation, documentation, SOP development, and technical training while maintaining safety, GMP, and GLP compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Fundamental understanding of process control concepts, instrumentation (flow, pressure, temperature, pH, and level), and loop tuning.
  • Familiarity with PLC programming, including ladder logic and function block, and HMI development.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks in production areas when required.
  • Comfort working as part of a cross-functional, interdisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Entry-level candidates with the required foundation are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell or equivalent PLC platforms.
  • Excel data analysis skills.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Autodesk Fusion, or equivalent CAD/drawing platforms for P&ID and electrical drawing creation, review, and redlining.
  • Familiarity with industrial data historians or process data logging platforms.
  • Proficiency with Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk (View, Historian, AssetCentre).
  • Experience with other DCS or industrial automation platforms, such as Ignition or Wonderware, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Own plant-wide control systems and instrumentation from concept and design through installation, commissioning, validation, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop, maintain, and revise PLC and HMI programs to meet production requirements and support continuous improvement.
  • Assist with the design, specification, installation, and commissioning of new control-system equipment and instrumentation.
  • Build, configure, and maintain plant data acquisition and historian systems to support accurate process data capture for production, quality, and regulatory needs.
  • Perform process risk assessments related to control systems and instrumentation and develop and implement mitigation plans.
  • Conduct periodic process control verifications and instrument calibration reviews to maintain GMP compliance.
  • Assist with execution and reporting of new equipment and control-system validation, including IQ, OQ, and PQ.
  • Support process mapping and P&ID documentation, and document control-system changes, troubleshooting outcomes, and validation results, including deviations, CAPA, and change control.
  • Develop and implement new or revised SOPs for control systems and data acquisition, and provide technical training to plant personnel.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, GMP, and GLP requirements.
