About The Position

The Electrical & Controls Technician is a hands-on technical role focused on advanced troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, and restoration of industrial electrical, controls, and automation systems. The primary purpose of this position is to rapidly and systematically identify equipment faults, restore production equipment to safe and reliable operation, reduce repeat failures, and strengthen the plant’s internal electrical and controls capacity. This position primarily supports complex troubleshooting and electrical/controls repairs while also executing preventive maintenance activities when feasible based on production and maintenance priorities.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on industrial electrical and controls experience, with strong preference for candidates with 7–10+ years in manufacturing or heavy industrial environments required.
  • Demonstrated advanced capability in electrical and controls troubleshooting, rather than primarily installation or routine maintenance experience.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical power and control systems up to 480 VAC.
  • Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLC systems, preferably ControlLogix and CompactLogix.
  • Ability to perform online PLC diagnostics using Studio 5000 or equivalent Rockwell software.
  • Strong experience with VFDs, motor controls, MCCs, AC/DC motors, relays, contactors, safety circuits, and industrial control panels.
  • Strong understanding of digital and analog I/O, including 4–20 mA signals, sensors, encoders, transducers, interlocks, permissives, and feedback systems.
  • Advanced ability to read and troubleshoot from electrical schematics, ladder logic, control drawings, P&IDs where applicable, and OEM documentation.
  • Strong proficiency with electrical and controls diagnostic/test equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to systematically troubleshoot complex equipment failures under production pressure.
  • Working knowledge of LOTO, electrical safe-work practices, and NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Ability to document troubleshooting findings and completed work clearly in the CMMS.
  • Pre-employment drug screening
  • Background checks
  • Medical examinations
  • Safety certifications
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Working in various weather conditions
  • Travel to remote locations

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • Allen-Bradley/Rockwell automation training or certifications preferred.
  • ISA CCST or equivalent controls/instrumentation certification is preferred and considered a plus.
  • Experience with servo and motion-control systems.
  • Experience with industrial communication networks.
  • Experience performing controlled PLC logic or parameter modifications under established change-management procedures.
  • Experience supporting equipment commissioning, controls upgrades, and reliability improvement projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and fault isolation on industrial electrical, controls, and automation systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems including 480/277/240/120 VAC and 24 VDC, motor circuits, MCCs, contactors, relays, control panels, and safety circuits.
  • Troubleshoot Allen-Bradley PLC-controlled equipment, including ControlLogix and CompactLogix systems, I/O, communications, interlocks, permissives, sequences, and field-device faults.
  • Troubleshoot and configure VFDs, AC/DC drives, servo systems, motors, encoders, and motion-control equipment.
  • Diagnose instrumentation and field devices including proximity sensors, photoeyes, limit switches, pressure and temperature devices, transducers, and analog/digital signals.
  • Use electrical schematics, PLC logic, control drawings, OEM documentation, and field measurements to systematically identify equipment failures.
  • Perform electrical wiring, component replacement, panel modifications, terminations, parameter verification, device setup, calibration, and functional testing.
  • Use multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers, oscilloscopes, signal simulators, and other electrical/controls diagnostic equipment as required.
  • Determine the actual failure mechanism/root cause before replacing components whenever practical, minimizing trial-and-error troubleshooting.
  • Verify equipment functionality following repairs and ensure equipment is safely and reliably returned to Operations.
  • Investigate recurring electrical and controls failures and support RCA/RCFA and permanent corrective actions.
  • Execute and support electrical controls preventive maintenance (PM) activities when feasible, based on workload, equipment availability, and production priorities.
  • Perform specialized PM activities requiring electrical/controls expertise, including inspections, electrical testing, calibration, parameter verification, control-panel inspections, sensors, encoders, instrumentation, drives, motors, and control/safety circuits.
  • Provide technical feedback to improve PM tasks, frequencies, acceptance criteria, and troubleshooting instructions based on equipment condition and failure history.
  • Support other maintenance technicians during complex electrical/controls troubleshooting and PM activities when specialized technical knowledge is required.
  • Develop and maintain troubleshooting documentation based on actual equipment failures and successful repairs.
  • Provide technical knowledge transfer and assistance to other technicians without assuming personnel supervisory responsibilities.
  • Support equipment modifications, upgrades, commissioning, and reliability improvements involving electrical and controls systems.
  • Maintain accurate work order documentation, including symptoms, troubleshooting performed, findings, corrective actions, parts replaced, and final verification.
  • Follow all applicable LOTO, electrical safe-work practices, NFPA 70E requirements, and site safety procedures.
  • Prioritize work based on safety, equipment criticality, and production requirements, generally in the order of: Production-critical electrical/controls troubleshooting and emergency response, Complex electrical and controls repair, Electrical/controls preventive maintenance, Recurring-failure elimination and reliability improvements, Technical documentation and knowledge transfer.
  • Other duties as assigned.
