Electric Vehicle Service Technical Writer

ORANGE EV LLCKansas City, KS

About The Position

As an Electric Vehicle Service Technical Writer on the Service Support Team, you will transform complex engineering knowledge — from high-voltage powertrain architecture to Battery Management Systems — into clear, accurate documentation that empowers technicians, customers, and partners to work safely and confidently with our zero-emission Class 8 trucks. You will own the full documentation lifecycle: researching with our engineering and service teams, authoring manuals and SOPs, and maintaining content as our vehicles and software evolve. This role sits at the intersection of technical depth and communication clarity and is critical to scaling Orange EV's service and support capabilities.

Requirements

  • 2–5 years of technical writing experience, preferably in automotive, EV, heavy equipment, or high-tech manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear, accurate documentation from complex technical source material (portfolio of work samples required).
  • Strong interviewing and research skills — comfortable working directly with engineers and technicians to capture technical details.
  • Experience with content authoring tools such as MadCap Flare, Oxygen XML, Confluence, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and familiarity with version control or CMS platforms.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, especially regarding safety-critical content such as high-voltage warnings and service specifications.
  • Strong project management skills — able to handle multiple concurrent documentation projects under fast-moving deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with RoboHelp and/or CSS for web-based and structured documentation publishing.
  • Experience documenting automotive, Class 8 truck, or EV systems — including electric powertrains, battery systems, or charging infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with EV-specific components: high-voltage architectures, CAN bus systems, Battery Management Systems (BMS), and electric drive units.
  • Knowledge of high-voltage safety protocols and standards (NFPA 70E or equivalent).
  • Understanding of OBD-II diagnostics and vehicle service processes at the dealership or OEM level.
  • Familiarity with SAE or other automotive industry documentation standards.
  • Experience with instructional design methodologies (ADDIE, SAM) to support training content development.
  • Proficiency in DITA, XML, HTML, Markdown, or other structured content formats.

Responsibilities

  • Author and maintain service manuals, diagnostic guides, high-voltage safety procedures, and repair instructions for Orange EV Class 8 electric trucks.
  • Develop Operator, Maintenance and Service documents that translate complex EV systems into accessible, user-friendly content.
  • Partner with Service Support and Engineering teams to ensure all documentation reflects current product configurations and field learnings.
  • Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for service workflows, including delivery inspections, high-voltage safety lockout/tagout, and warranty claim processes.
  • Support the Technical Training team by developing reference materials, job aids, and supplementary content aligned with training curricula.
  • Document field service bulletins and technical service updates as product changes are released.
  • Manage document revision control, version tracking, and translation coordination for all technical content.
  • Validate documentation accuracy through hands-on review with subject matter experts (SMEs) and, where appropriate, direct vehicle or system testing.
  • Maintain a consistent style, tone, and format across all documentation in alignment with Orange EV brand and safety standards.
  • Build and manage content within a content management system (CMS) or Learning Management System (LMS) to support scalable, distributed access.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Training Team to align documentation with hands-on training programs and competency benchmarks.
  • Partner with third-party OEM partners and suppliers to obtain and incorporate component-level documentation.
