About The Position

This is an introductory training position in preparation for advancement to Apprentice Electric System & Generation Operator. The incumbent will receive guidance and training from more senior operators and will perform various electrical system operations. This includes dispatching personnel, monitoring, data recording/retrieval, and utilizing Borough web interfaces and email to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. The role requires becoming familiar with the Borough’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to independently monitor and manipulate the electric system as directed. The operator will monitor and interpret software, meters, and gauges, collect and input data from substations and power generation plants, and maintain records. Communication with external entities like First Energy and Tenaska, as well as internal personnel, is crucial. The position also involves performing security checks, maintaining the Operations Center and related areas, and operating vehicles. The role requires working in various environmental conditions and becoming familiar with generation equipment to perform routine starts, operations, and shutdowns, as well as assisting with maintenance and cleaning of equipment. Safety is paramount, and adherence to all Borough Safety Rules and Regulations is expected. The position is designated as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to shift changes, overtime, call-in, and stand-by duty, including filling in for absent shift operators.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.
  • Must have had a clean driving record for no less than three (3) years prior to hire.
  • Must possess acceptable level of computer ability.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs especially Excel.
  • Must be able to navigate the internet via a web browser and utilize email software.
  • Computer aptitude will be verified to evaluate proficiency.
  • Must be able to perform simple addition and subtraction.
  • Must be capable of accurately recording and retrieving data.
  • Must possess and validate ability to communicate effectively and professionally with others utilizing written and spoken word even under stressful situations.
  • Must take and successfully complete assigned training to develop knowledge base and skills to perform job responsibilities.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects and to perform other job tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Up to a year experience in electrical or power plant related work preferred and will receive preference.

Responsibilities

  • Report to Electric Supply Supervisor and Assistant Supply Supervisor.
  • Receive guidance and training from more senior Electric System & Generation Operators.
  • Perform various Electrical System operations including dispatching personnel, monitoring, data recording/retrieval, and utilizing Borough web interfaces, email, and related duties.
  • Follow established standard operating procedures with regards to safety, electric system, and generation assets.
  • Become familiar with the Borough’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to the point of independently monitoring and manipulating the electric system as directed.
  • Monitor and interpret a wide variety of software, meters, gauges, and indicators which display various conditions of the electric system and generators.
  • Collect and input data from substations, power generation plants, and electric system operations using computers and manual methods.
  • Properly log and legibly maintain records of data.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with First Energy, Tenaska, power suppliers, and other Borough personnel to complete duties.
  • Perform security checks and maintain vigilance in monitoring Electric Department assets.
  • Perform tasks relative to overall maintenance of Operations Center, power plants, substations, and adjacent areas as assigned including cleaning, receiving deliveries, clearing snow, and mowing grass.
  • Operate vehicles such as trucks, loader, van, etc.
  • Become familiar with generation equipment to the extent of making routine starts, operations, and shutdowns of the equipment.
  • Assist more senior personnel in overhaul, maintenance, operation, and cleaning of power generators, engines, auxiliaries, and substation equipment.
  • Observe all Borough Safety Rules and Regulations; Practice and Think Safety at all times.
  • Subject to changing shifts based on a continuous operation.
  • Also subject to overtime, call-in, and stand-by duty.
  • Fill in for absent shift operators.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
