About The Position

The Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) is committed to ensuring that Florida's consumers receive essential services—electric, natural gas, telephone, water, and wastewater—in a safe, reasonable, and reliable manner. The FPSC exercises regulatory authority over utilities in areas such as rate base/economic regulation, competitive market oversight, and monitoring of safety, reliability, and service. The Division of Engineering is responsible for providing recommendations on technical issues, including evaluating engineering capital cost estimates, utility plant expenditures, reserve margins, and operating/maintenance costs. It also conducts cost-effectiveness determinations impacting consumers, regulated industries, and the regulatory environment.

Requirements

  • Four years of relevant work experience in the area of engineering, accounting, finance, mathematics, statistics, public administration, business administration or economics is required.
  • An associate’s degree and two years of relevant work experience OR a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may be used as an alternative for the years of required experience.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and the electric utility industry.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and evaluate data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be located in either Polk, Pinellas, Pasco, or Hillsborough counties.
  • Background investigations, including criminal history record checks and education verification's, will be conducted on all applicants recommended for hiring.
  • Federal law requires all employers to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all persons hired to work in the United States.
  • Civil Service Law requires all males born after December 31, 1959, to register with the Selective Service System unless they meet certain exemptions under the law.
  • Preference in appointment and employment shall be given to veterans and other persons as required by Chapter 295, Florida Statutes, Veterans’ Law.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects electric utility facilities and evaluates new construction of Commission jurisdictional electric utility owned facilities for safety compliance.
  • Input electric safety inspection results in the safety database.
  • Resolves technical customer complaints, which include power reliability, power quality, damaged equipment, location of utility equipment and verification of electric meters.
  • At the customer’s request, witnesses electric meter tests to verify that correct procedures are used and that test equipment is calibrated and working properly.
  • Extensive vehicle travel is required, at times overnight, to conduct electric safety field inspections.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be subject to irregular work hours and call-outs for emergencies.
