Electric Propulsion Systems Engineer II (Onsite)

RTX•East Hartford, CT
•$68,900 - $131,100•Onsite

About The Position

The Electric Propulsion Systems Engineer II will work in Pratt & Whitney Engineering’s Electric Propulsion System Engineering group, which architects, designs, and develops hybrid-electric propulsion systems. The group works across engineering disciplines and the system life cycle, from control-system technology development and customer-requirement interpretation through hardware and software implementation, testing, certification, and field-issue resolution. The role supports concept definition, system integration, prototype testing, product design, certification, validation, and technical proposals for emerging hybrid-electric systems and components. The engineer will perform systems engineering for aerospace electric powertrain systems; develop electrical system and subsystem requirements; model powertrain systems at different levels of fidelity; design electrical system protections; develop integrated verification and validation plans; and analyze and present simulation and test results. Travel of up to 25% may be required to support testing at Pratt & Whitney and partner sites in North America and Europe. New hires begin their first 2.5 years in Pratt & Whitney’s Engineering Development Program, completing three rotations lasting 12, 9, and 9 months, typically across distinct disciplines in the hiring department. The program is intended to build breadth and depth through technical experiences.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in engineering or physics obtained by the start date.
  • Experience with MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • U.S. citizenship is required because only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under the program or contract.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Coursework or work experience in power electronics, electric machines, high-voltage systems, and high-power protection systems.
  • Experience designing electronic hardware for aerospace applications.
  • General knowledge of batteries and other energy-storage systems.
  • Broad familiarity with military or commercial gas-turbine engine and air-cycle system design, development, and validation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform systems engineering of electric powertrain systems for aerospace electric propulsion.
  • Develop electrical system and subsystem requirements to meet platform-level objectives.
  • Model electric powertrain systems at various levels of fidelity to inform designs and processes.
  • Design electrical system protections, including protection strategy, trip-curve and selectivity analysis, insulation coordination, and failure analysis.
  • Develop integrated electric-system verification and validation plans.
  • Analyze simulation and test data and present and visualize results for an audience.
  • Travel up to 25% to support electric powertrain subsystem and electrified-engine testing at Pratt & Whitney and partner sites in North America and Europe.
