Electric Line Worker 3rd/ 4th Year Apprentice or Full

City Utilities of Springfield•Springfield, MO
•$44 - $52

About The Position

City Utilities is hiring an Electric Line Worker in an apprentice 3rd-year, apprentice 4th-year, or full classification. Under the direction of the Supervisor-Electric T&D or designee, the position constructs and maintains overhead and underground transmission and distribution power lines, and installs and maintains equipment that conducts electrical energy from generating stations through substations to customers. The full classification performs work with increased proficiency, autonomy, and ownership compared with the apprentice classifications. Apprentices progress through duties according to their classification and training. A 3rd-year apprentice may work on specified 7,620-volt single-phase lines and perform certain transformer and line work under supervision. A 4th-year apprentice learns to use hot-stick equipment on all voltages and rubber gloves and sleeves on distribution work up to 15 kV, and assists with line construction and distribution under supervision. Apprentices are expected to develop safe work habits and become familiar with line equipment and apparatus. The full Electric Line Worker directs and assists crews with line construction and maintenance, including overhead and underground equipment and energized circuits. The role also involves using GIS and mobile work-management applications, setting up work zones, operating assigned equipment, and assisting with material and vehicle upkeep and the training of other line personnel. The position is safety-sensitive and is performed outdoors in changing weather and potentially hazardous conditions, including electrical hazards, traffic, noise, and awkward or confined spaces. A climbing test is required. Employees must wear City Utilities-provided uniforms, including flame-retardant/arc-rated clothing, and appropriate personal protective equipment. Shift work and overtime may be required. The position is subject to the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program; testing may be required.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent is required.
  • For the apprentice classification, the candidate must be in the last two years of a four-year electric line worker apprenticeship program, or exceptional experience may be considered in lieu of apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis, subject to Apprentice Committee approval and classification review.
  • Apprentice candidates must have at least two years of experience climbing wood poles, towers, and fixtures; operating bucket trucks, digger/derricks, and cranes; working at heights using climbing tools, platforms, ladders, or other aerial methods; and setting up work zones.
  • For the full classification, five years of experience in progressively responsible electric line construction and maintenance on energized and de-energized circuits is required.
  • Must have experience installing underground lines, making up terminators and elbows, and operating equipment to install and test underground lines for the full classification.
  • Must have a valid Missouri Class A CDL with air brakes, or be able to obtain a Missouri Commercial Learner’s Permit within six weeks of employment and a Class A CDL with air brakes within six months of employment. City Utilities requires approximately 15 hours of classroom training and behind-the-wheel training; hours are to be determined.
  • Must pass a climbing test.
  • Must meet physical requirements including the ability to lift at least 75 pounds, climb poles, towers, and fixtures, and work at heights; must work within the rated capacity of aerial lifts, ladders, fall-restraint devices, and related equipment.
  • Must be able to work varying schedules if needed and may be required to work shifts and overtime.
  • Must wear required uniform clothing and appropriate personal protective equipment, remain alert and responsive to changing circumstances, and comply with company policies.
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
  • Must have knowledge of standard electric utility transmission and distribution equipment and operations, electric power system procedures and equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Must be able to train and educate apprentices safely, make mature decisions without direct supervision, work courteously with customers and coworkers, use primary phasing equipment and electric line tools, identify and safely resolve urgent problems, communicate verbally and in writing, operate a computer and Toughbook, and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Must be able to use digital tools and platforms, including Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, AI-enhanced applications, and self-service systems, and be willing and able to learn emerging technologies such as mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven utility platforms.
  • The position is subject to Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements; testing may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational school or some college coursework in the electrical field for apprentice candidates.
  • Experience working with 600 volts and below.
  • Experience installing secondary and single-phase primary underground lines, making up terminators and elbows, and operating equipment to install and test underground lines.
  • Experience working energized single-phase primary voltage up to and including 7,620 volts using rubber gloves and insulated sticks.
  • Experience working on single-phase primary corner poles, transferring energized deadends, and using protective equipment, line jumpers, and cover-ups.
  • Experience fusing and refusing transformers of 50 kVA or less.
  • Experience safely performing work on energized three-phase lines up to and including 15 kV using rubber gloves and sleeves.
  • Experience using hot-stick equipment on all voltages and rubber gloves and sleeves on distribution work up to 15 kV.
  • Technical or trade-specific training for the full classification.
