About The Position

Challenge Preparatory Charter School (Challenge Prep) is seeking experienced Elective Teachers for Music, Science, and World Languages for the 26-27 school year. Founded in 2010, Challenge Prep serves over 1200 students from Kindergarten to 12th grade across three sites in Far Rockaway, Queens. The school's mission is to prepare students for academic excellence, mastery of NY State Learning Standards, and career aspirations. Challenge fosters intellectual, aesthetic, social, emotional, and ethical development, preparing students to be responsible 21st-century citizens. The school offers a rigorous instructional program with a focus on social-emotional learning, technology integration, and data-driven instruction, alongside authentic field experiences, career counseling, and college coursework. Collaboration among staff across all sites is expected to support all scholars.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Highly motivated to teach students from underserved areas and devoted to closing the achievement gap
  • The ability to create a classroom setting where students of every academic level experience enjoyment, engagement, and enthusiasm in their learning
  • Strong teamwork ethic
  • Ability to use data to drive instruction

Responsibilities

  • Teach students in content area classes to help them reach their full potential, focusing on individual aspirations and strengths.
  • Plan for students of all ability levels, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities, to achieve academic mastery.
  • Participate in after-school and/or Saturday tutoring, sports, enrichment, arts, and family programs.
  • Participate in in-house committees of special programs.
  • Engage in professional development activities such as inquiry work, intervisitations, common planning, and collaborative conversation.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to write unit plans and interim assessments.
  • Share teaching strategies, visit peer classrooms, and analyze student data.
  • Develop best practice pedagogy that supports literacy and critical thinking skills across all subject areas.
  • Employ a variety of collaborative team-teaching models for ELL students and special needs students.
  • Apply data gathered through formative and summative assessments to guide instructional plans.
  • Develop an individual growth plan, including professional goals and objectives, in collaboration with the Principal and/or Assistant Principal.
  • Utilize technology, including a parent/student portal and school website, for regular written updates and/or grades.
