About The Position

A part-time position that performs complex administrative and clerical work in Tooele County elections. This role involves assisting with the collection and processing of election ballots, managing voter interactions at vote centers, and potentially supervising newer employees. The position requires adherence to strict election laws, security protocols, and administrative procedures.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older, preferably 18 years or older.
  • Must undergo and pass a background check through Human Resources.
  • Must be willing to take an Oath of Office, as required by state law.
  • Must be a pre-registered or registered voter within Tooele County and disclose party affiliation (if any).
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of modern computer practices and procedures.
  • Skill in operating a computer, printer, cellphone, internet browser and electronic tablet.
  • Ability to train, supervise and direct other employees when needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Must have a high level of customer service skills; must be friendly, helpful, and showing self-control.
  • Must be adaptable to new situations and changing laws; cooperate with supervisors and peers; accept and providing constructive criticism.
  • Must be professional in dress and manner; showing good housekeeping of the general work area.
  • Must exhibit the utmost integrity, honesty and ethics in all aspects of the position.
  • Must attend Election Worker training approximately 2 weeks prior to each election.
  • Must complete State Security Training and Signature Verification training, if hired for positions that include these additional requirements.
  • Must communicate schedule availability surrounding scheduled election dates.
  • Occasional after-hours work required surrounding elections, including unscheduled special elections.
  • Considerable walking and standing may be involved.
  • Travel for training or ballot collection is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting election ballots by driving to various ballot drop boxes located within Tooele County; remove ballots from drop boxes and secure them in sealed bags and log seal numbers.
  • Deliver ballots to the Election Office; assist in sorting, processing, and tabulating election ballots using various election machines.
  • Manage timecard using the county timeclock system.
  • Follow ballot chain of custody practices as directed by supervisors; ensure staff, voters, and candidates are compliant with electioneering laws.
  • Follows direction and training guidelines to administer in-person voting at various vote centers around Tooele County; verify the identity of in-person voters using government-issued ID; check voters in on electronic poll books; provide printed ballots to voters; answer general questions about the election process.
  • Securely verify and audit voter data and signatures, if required.
  • Assist in setting up and cleaning up vote center equipment, materials, and signage before and after each election.
  • Participate in multi-round verification counts and logging results.
  • Ensure ballot chain of custody practices are followed among all staff; Lead in ensuring staff, voters, and candidates are compliant with electioneering laws.
  • Administer in-person voting at various vote centers around Tooele County; ensure staff follow administrative procedures as outlined.
  • Work closely with the Chief Deputy Clerk and the Elected Official in troubleshooting equipment failures, mitigating operational setbacks, and implementing continuing operation protocols.
  • Take additional annual security trainings as required by the Lt Governor's Office.
  • Exercises training and/or supervision over newer employees when the Chief Deputy Clerk and the Elected Official are absent or delegate training duties.
