About The Position

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is seeking a detail-oriented and highly skilled writer to serve as an Elected Official Correspondence Liaison within the Commissioner’s Correspondence Unit. The selected candidate will play a critical role in managing written communications on behalf of the Commissioner, ensuring timely, accurate, and policy-aligned responses to inquiries from elected officials and the public.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting and coordinating timely responses to correspondence from elected officials for the Commissioner’s signature, incorporating research and input from NYC DOT divisions and subject matter experts.
  • Ensuring all outgoing correspondence is clear, concise, professional, and aligned with the Commissioner’s communication style and NYC DOT editorial standards.
  • Researching, drafting, and revising acknowledgment letters and emails in response to constituent inquiries submitted through webforms and other channels.
  • Preparing customized, high-priority responses addressing sensitive issues, including traffic fatalities, crashes, pedestrian and cyclist injuries, and other urgent public safety concerns.
  • Maintaining and updating the unit’s template response library, including references to the NYC Street Design Manual (Green Book) and other official guidance materials.
  • Conducting research across internal systems, public records, media outlets, and social media platforms to inform responses and ensure accuracy.
  • Collaborating with program areas and division leadership to gather information and develop comprehensive, policy-consistent communications.
  • Assisting with special projects and performing additional duties as assigned to support the Commissioner’s Correspondence Unit.
