About The Position

This is a full-time, night shift position for an EKG Technician at Advocate Condell Medical Center - Cardiovascular Diagnostics. The role requires the technician to function independently for the majority of the shift, covering the ED and the entire hospital from 2 am to 6 am on weekdays and 10 pm to 6 am on weekends. The position involves performing routine and STAT ECG procedures, Holter and Event Monitor applications/removals/processing, and Pacemaker checks. It also includes significant clerical functions related to patient billing, record-keeping, and ensuring studies are ready for physician interpretation. The technician will interact with medical staff, nurses, and other hospital departments, and is expected to participate in professional development and process improvement teams. Training assistance to new employees and physicians is also a responsibility. Maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient work environment is crucial.

Requirements

  • High school graduate
  • 1 year ECG or hospital related experience or graduate or current enrollment in a clinical health program
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good time management
  • Good documentation/record keeping skills
  • BCLS certification
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and STAT call ins
  • Ability to perform a medium amount of lifting & transferring related to patient care (i.e., lifting up to 20-50 lbs occasionally)
  • Exposure to ill patients, may be exposed to blood & urine samples
  • Ability to transcribe medical information
  • Ability to push equipment (i.e., ECG machine)
  • Ability to communicate with patients
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance
  • Must recognize the needs & behaviors of a variety of age groups treated i.e., understand child growth & development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior & look for signs of normal aging

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Performing routine and STAT request for ECG procedures
  • Troubleshooting problems associated with performing ECG’s, i.e., calming anxious patients, distracting pediatric patients
  • Preparing patient for procedure, respecting patients privacy in an empathetic & gentle manner
  • Obtaining relevant patient history
  • Maintaining a timely flow of patient in room assignments or work areas
  • Entering/editing data entered in ECG machine before transmission of data to mainframe
  • Performing Holter and Event Monitor applications/removals/processing
  • Using and troubleshooting Holter and Event recorder equipment
  • Performing Pacemaker checks, transmitting data and assuring results are scanned to patient EMR
  • Providing clerical functions necessary for physician interpretation & confirmation, department record-keeping & patient billing
  • Ensuring that appropriate procedure has been ordered & charged
  • Collecting all information for the interpreting physician & placing the study to be read within 2 hours of order entry
  • Completing procedures paperwork immediately following the study
  • Editing ECG’s, Holters and Event reports then distributing all paperwork to cardiologists for review and signatures
  • Maintaining accurate and complete records of all tests performed including "listings" of all EKGs, holters, etc.
  • Maintaining daily counts, monthly reports, and data for P.I. activity
  • Participating in Performance Improvement activities
  • Maintaining printers, able to change cartridges or initiate call to obtain service for all printers
  • Understanding and utilizing downtime procedures as needed
  • Interacting with medical staff, nurses & other hospital departments regarding patient care & departmental procedures
  • Providing a copy of each ECG at the Nursing Station
  • Identifying arrhythmias or critical findings and reporting them immediately, as well as any other acute changes in patient condition
  • Coordinating patient care with patient’s nurse and/or other ancillary departments
  • Communicating with patient’s nurse if a patient care issue arises preventing an ECG from being done, i.e., dressings, central lines, uncooperative patient
  • Participating in professional development & process improvement teams by attending inservices, meetings & continuing education programs appropriate to the goals & needs of the department
  • Presenting short inservices to familiarize department with ECG Technologist role, new or updated procedures as required
  • Attending on campus or in-Advocate system conferences to increase knowledge on cardiology, teamwork or other subjects and actively pursuing continuing education opportunities
  • Maintaining up to date and current status with all mandatory System education and annual requirements
  • Attending & participating in department meetings in person or via conference call
  • Attending department inservice programs to ensure technical competence
  • Maintaining CPR, staying current with any licensure requirements
  • Providing training assistance to new employees and physicians
  • Providing education & troubleshooting assistance
  • Completing orientatee’s checklist & returning checklist to Cardiology Manager
  • Completing all annual technical and/or arrhythmia competencies and returning to Cardiology Manager
  • Maintaining a safe, organized & efficient work environment
  • Complying with safety standards & infection control practices
  • Reporting equipment malfunction immediately to clinical engineering and remove equipment from use
  • Reporting operational problems & inventory depletion immediately to Cardiology Management
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the department & equipment
