About The Position

The EHS Specialist partners with San Diego Operations manufacturing teams to strengthen implementation of EHS programs and compliance across daily operations and new product introduction/transfer activities. The role assesses and reduces risk through hazard assessments and incident investigations, supports chemical manufacturing/PSM and ISO 14001/45001 elements, delivers EHS training and emergency response readiness, and interfaces with site stakeholders and regulators as needed.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years of applicable experience.
  • A strong technical understanding of new product introduction lifecycle and laboratory safety.
  • Equipment and processes used in the life science industry and solid understanding of applying EHS regulations/standards/assessments at research and development and pilot plant scale.
  • Ability to support EHS programs in a fast paced, dynamic, cross functional and highly collaborative environment.
  • Strong customer service, creativity, skills and ability to support “EHS Leader” culture which inspires others to desire and achieve EHS excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with functional areas of San Diego Operations (Components Mfg. and Flowcell Mfg, and Reagent Mfg.) to implement methods, programs, controls, and safeguards which promote a safe work environment.
  • Track and report data that drives EHS performance reviews for area owners, engage in gemba walks and continuous improvement activities that are EHS related.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to solve and support for EHS related challenges and reduce risk during product development and transfer activities.
  • Investigate hazards, near misses and incidents with the goal of finding root causes and implementing ways to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide technical guidance on chemical manufacturing and Process Safety Management aspects, utilizing hierarchy of controls.
  • Assist with EHS process for onboarding and routing of new equipment
  • Lead, support and manage implementation of regional EHS programs (e.g., lab health and safety, biosafety, ergonomics, controlled substance, particularly hazardous chemicals, laser safety, fire safety, inspections, risk assessments).
  • Partner with upstream business groups to engage all employees in safety and sustainability programs.
  • Perform EHS assessments for new processes, products, and equipment that include risk assessments, confined space, lockout/tagout, ergonomics and machine guarding.
  • Promote, reinforce, and sustain a strong safety culture through engagement with site leadership and operational teams.
  • Assist in the regional implementation of EHS management system (45001/14001) elements for San Diego site.
  • Engage and lead onsite Emergency Response Procedures, planning, tabletops, and Operational Excellence activities.
  • Develop and deliver training and coaching programs which help develop strong EHS leaders.
  • Lead in-house emergency response activities (incident command, training, table top and functional drills).
  • Support global safety initiatives and tools (policy, software tools, campaigns).
  • Interface with regulatory agencies on assigned EHS matters as required.
  • Support emergency response activities via rotating on call program.
