About The Position

The EHS Specialist II in the Fulton, NY plant, plays a critical role in supporting the Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager to maintain a safe and compliant work environment at the Fulton plant. This position focuses on implementing and sustaining EHS programs that meet federal, state, and local regulations while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The EHS Specialist II works closely with leadership and operational teams to ensure that safety standards are upheld, and environmental responsibilities are met. A key responsibility of this role is managing hazardous and universal waste streams, including oils, coolants, and oil-contaminated water. The EHS Specialist II ensures proper storage, handling, and disposal of these materials in accordance with regulatory requirements. Accurate recordkeeping for controlled substances is essential to maintain compliance and support audits. This position also contributes to emergency preparedness by assisting in the development of response plans for spills and other incidents. Beyond compliance, the EHS Specialist II is expected to engage in leadership development activities and promote proactive safety initiatives. By driving training programs, monitoring performance metrics, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, the Specialist helps create a safer workplace and supports the plant’s sustainability goals. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to protecting both employees and the environment.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as environmental regulations, procedure manuals, MSDS documents.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, DOL, DOT, etc.) preferred.
  • Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lead training classes.
  • Must have strong communication skills.
  • Undergraduate degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, Environmental/Chemical or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in an industrial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing, implementing, and auditing EHS policies and procedures.
  • Maintain training records, coordinate employee training, and support new hire orientation.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous and universal wastes; maintain records on controlled substances (oil, coolants, oil-contaminated water).
  • Assist with compliance with OSHA, EPA, DEP, DOT, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with compliance to all Huhtamaki policies, and procedures and governmental standards (OSHA, EPA, DEP, DOT, and other regulatory requirements).
  • Provide audit support and prepare regulatory reports.
  • Keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that may impact the organization.
  • Develop and maintain the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan; support Tier II, TRI, and Air Emissions reporting.
  • Track and monitor solid waste streams; support sustainability initiatives and water/energy intensity metrics.
  • Perform reporting requirements of various state and federal agencies (i.e., OSHA, DOL, EPA, DOT, and other local agencies) as needed.
  • Lead or assist with safety and environmental training sessions for employees.
  • Conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and routine site inspections.
  • Performs and/or plans for air, sound level, and industrial hygiene testing when required.
  • Support the EHS Manager in wellness, workers compensation, and emergency preparedness programs.
  • Act as qualified backup for EHS Manager during absences and participate in succession planning and leadership development activities.
