About The Position

JM Huber is seeking an Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to support the Gordon GA Kaolin Operations of Active Minerals International. The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for leading and managing all environmental, health, safety, industrial hygiene, and regulatory compliance programs for Gordon Operations, the associated mining properties, and the AMTEC Laboratory. The role provides oversight of MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) compliance, OSHA (Occupational Safety AND Health Administration), environmental permitting (Title V air compliance, stormwater, and wastewater compliance programs), spill prevention programs, industrial hygiene monitoring, training programs, contractor safety, emergency preparedness, Federal, State, local and internal regulatory reporting. The position works closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, geology, contractors, purchasing, and corporate EHS leadership to identify and manage risk, support business growth, and ensure compliance obligations are met across the Gordon Plant and associated mining properties.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in a safety science/engineering/industrial hygiene discipline, environmental science/engineering or engineering, and knowledge of mining or mineral processing operations
  • 5-10 years experience
  • Part 46 MSHA experience
  • Must have good comprehension of management systems and risk based prioritization
  • Must be motivated and have a passion for EH&S
  • Proficient in the English language (oral and written)
  • Recognizable leadership skills

  • Demonstrated people influencing skills
  • Effective facilitator and communicator
  • Capable of developing and giving training
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State and Local occupational safety, health and environmental laws and regulations

  • Ability to productively deal with regulatory agencies, consultants and other contractor personnel
  • Ability to make explicit engineering recommendations for equipment layout/design changes to effect safety improvements
  • Respirator Fit Test is required at hire; no facial hair can interfere with the seal of the respirator at pre-hire and annual fit test screening.
  • Vision and hearing tests are also required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical safety, health, and environmental support and information to site personnel.
  • Take proactive measures to safeguard personnel and assets, by advising employees, lab technicians, engineering groups, the Gordon Leadership team etc. of regulatory changes with which the plants must comply. Sufficient advance notice should be provided so that compliance on the effective date of new regulations is assured. Periodically audit practices and records to ensure compliance with company programs and Federal/State/local occupational safety, health and environmental regulations.
  • Conduct risk assessments, audits, inspections, and behavioral observations to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Facilitate safety committee activities and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives.
  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses for injuries, illnesses, property damage, environmental events, and near misses.
  • Monitor lost-time injuries/illnesses and Worker's Compensation Claims. Monitor injury and incident trends and develop strategies to reduce operational risk. injury/illness and non-injury incident investigation reports and following up as necessary.
  • Collaborate with site leadership to implement Corporate EHS policies, procedures, and programs in Sustainability, and Environmental Management System based on Huber Sustainability Management System.
  • Develop, implement and update environmental compliance plans based on the Federal, local, and site regulatory requirements. Maintain oversight of all environmental compliance requirements associated with the Title V Air Permit, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), Wastewater permits, Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans, waste management requirements.
  • Coordinate permit application, renewals, and modifications associated with production increases, process changes, equipment modifications, and expansion projects. Provide technical guidance regarding air emissions controls, baghouse performance, visible emissions, and fugitive dust management.
  • Facilitate and participate in the Change Management process and review operational and capital improvement projects for environmental permitting, safety impacts, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain environmental, health, and safety training programs. Ensure compliance with MSHA Part 46 and other required regulatory training programs. Oversee contractor and visitor orientation processes.
  • Perform and/or coordinate industrial hygiene and environmental sampling and monitoring to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and best practices for both safety and environmental regulations. Support respiratory protection, hearing conservation, medical surveillance, and occupational health initiatives.
  • Drive a culture focused on accountability, employee engagement, risk reduction, and environmental stewardship.
  • Influence site leaders and employees through visible leadership and effective communication.
  • May perform other duties.
