We are looking for a collaborative, highly organized professional for the position of EHS Safety Engineer in Japan. The role will support the EHS manager in implementing EHS programs for our operations in Japan, and be responsible for the full implementation of EHS programs at the operational level through close partnership with stakeholders. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent technical/science discipline.
  • 8+ years of EHS experience - preferably at manufacturing sites or research and development environments.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of chemical and mechanical safety engineering and risk assessment.
  • Deep understanding and operational experience of national and local regulations and laws, including Labour Safety & Industrial Safety Law, Hazardous Materials / Chemicals Laws (Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control, Chemical Substance Control Law, etc.), Fire Prevention Law, Environmental Laws on emissions, wastewater, air quality, etc., and Prefectural EHS ordinances.
  • A certified occupational health officer.
  • Strong communication skills (in Japanese and English) with the ability to influence and work cross‑functionally (R&D engineers, facilities, etc.).
  • Highly self-motivated, self-managing, and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Passion to drive excellence, assertive, and adept at innovative problem-solving.
  • Able to run multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • R&D Lab Safety Management: Risk-based chemical, mechanical, electrical safety management by conducting regular risk assessments to labs, chemical reviews and inventory, equipment reviews, and indoor air quality monitoring.
  • R&D Lab Occupational Health Management: Coordinate and provide bi-annual indoor air quality monitoring in labs and special health check-ups (in labs and to users where regulated chemicals are handled).
  • General Occupational Health and Safety Management: As a certified occupational health officer, conduct regular office safety inspection, organise and facilitate a monthly health committee meeting, and coordinate and review a bi-monthly indoor air quality monitoring.
  • Lead onsite incident investigation & corrective/preventive action planning.
  • Advise and guide business teams on EHS matters
  • Emergency Preparedness: Work cross-functionally to maintain and improve emergency preparedness at the site by regularly reviewing the onsite preparedness against fire incidents and natural disasters, planning and organising emergency drills and training.
  • Environment Protection: Managing environmental impact from the site (waste disposal, emissions, water usage, chemical waste), ensuring compliance with environmental permits, reducing waste and monitoring and analysing the environment for improvement.
  • EHS Program Support: Assist EHS managers in communicating EHS programme performance and status to management, as well as defining solutions that integrate corporate EHS policy into local business operations.
  • A&A (Alteration & Addition) Project Support - Provide EHS support to A&A projects including EHS design reviews, contractor selection and management and site commissioning
  • Occupational Health (OH) - Provide relevant programatic support to local OH programs and compliance activities
