About The Position

The EHS Engineer will play a critical role in launching and supporting new business operations involving welding and fabrication in a non union manufacturing environment, with a primary focus on environmental compliance, permitting, and operational readiness. This role will lead environmental integration during equipment installation, and process ramp up, while growing upon EHS systems that support safe welding operations, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance within a collaborative team environment. The position requires a hands on, influential leader who can build programs, train employees, and partner cross functionally in a stable, but growth oriented environment. This position is also responsible for contributing to a safe work place and minimizing negative impacts by complying with the EHS policies, procedures, work instructions outlined in the EHSMS Training Assessment for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting welding, metal fabrication, or hot work operations.
  • Hands‑on experience with environmental permitting, reporting, and agency interaction.
  • Knowledge of EPA regulations (RCRA, CAA, CWA, EPCRA) and OSHA standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate well with all levels and departments of the business.
  • Good project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Comfort operating independently in a stable, but growth environment.
  • Experience with industrial ventilation and fume control systems.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 and EHS management systems.
  • Prior experience partnering closely with Engineering on capital projects.
  • Ability to conduct floor audits and inspections (walking, climbing, standing for extended periods).
  • Occasional lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Willingness to support off shift activities during start up or critical project phases.
  • On a continuous basis must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to make occasional trips to Manufacturing sites and customers by air and by automobile.
  • Duration from one to four days.
  • Able to be on call 24/7.
  • Able and willing to work around fuel mixtures, moving parts, and electrical power.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification such as CHMM, CEP, CSP, or CIH a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead environmental compliance for new and expanding welding and fabrication operations, including emissions evaluation, waste streams, and permit applicability.
  • Support environmental due diligence, permitting, and regulatory approvals for new business launches and expansions.
  • Develop and maintain environmental permits and plans (air permits related to welding fumes, wastewater, stormwater, SPCC, waste management).
  • Evaluate and implement controls for welding fumes, particulate emissions, and chemical usage from consumables, coatings, and cleaning agents.
  • Manage hazardous and non hazardous waste programs associated with welding operations (spent consumables, oils, solvents, sludge).
  • Prepare and submit required environmental reports (e.g., air emissions, waste, Tier II, TRI, as applicable).
  • Interface with regulatory agencies during inspections, start up notifications, and reporting.
  • Drive environmental training and awareness for production teams, welders, and support functions.
  • Support EHS Tech and the development and implementation of hot work and welding safety programs aligned with OSHA and company standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments for welding cells, fume extraction systems, ventilation, and confined or enclosed workspaces.
  • Support selection, installation, and validation of engineering controls (local exhaust ventilation, fume capture, PPE).
  • Partner with Engineering and Operations during equipment installation, line layout, and commissioning.
  • Support incident investigations, near miss reporting, and corrective action implementation.
  • Train employees and supervisors on hot work permits, environmental controls, and safe work practices.
  • Support a direct engagement, non union workforce through clear communication, coaching, and presence on the shop floor.
  • Build credibility with production teams, welders, supervisors, and leaders as a trusted EHS resource.
  • Collaborate with HR on onboarding, training, and compliance for new hires supporting business growth.
  • Reinforce a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish EHS processes and metrics suitable for a new or expanding operation.
  • Participate in EHS management system development and audits (ISO 14001 familiarity preferred).
  • Identify and implement opportunities to reduce environmental impact, emissions, and waste.
  • Each employee has the authority to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of non-conformities relating to the product, process and quality system and has the authority to stop further work on non-conforming suspect product until the deficiency or conditions have been corrected.
  • All employees will abide by their location’s EH&S policy endorsed by the local management, comply with the legal and other requirements and operational controls established under its EHSMS, work toward achieving established objectives and targets, and conform to procedures consistent with the ISO 14001 standard.  All employees will also understand all of the environmental aspects of his/her job. An employee should report, and if necessary stop, any activity that does not conform to the policy or may injure himself/herself.
  • Responsible to maintain permit discharge and normal daily function of Wastewater treatment operations.
  • Meet with Management on status of production levels, product quality, scrap reporting, etc.
  • Support training objectives for Stores/Maintenance and EHS.
  • Interface with Human Resources Manager to ensure that established policy, rules and regulations, and procedures are followed.
  • Ensures compliance with all EHSMS policies and procedures.
  • Is responsible for the facility and the grounds to ensure everything is in proper working order and safe.
  • Sees that company policies and programs are effectively made known; cooperates and assists in the development of effective communications.
  • Promotes a positive employer-employee relation.
  • Maintains inter-departmental relationships of such a caliber as to promote confidence, integrity and cooperation.
  • Capable of providing support as requested by Plant Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.
