About The Position

The Environmental Health, Safety & Compliance (EHS) Specialist supports the implementation and day-to-day execution of NSU’s environmental, health, safety, and regulatory compliance programs across multiple regions. This role works closely with the Director of EHS and regional teams to help maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and to promote a strong safety culture across all operations. Based in Hillsborough, NJ, this position plays a key role in supporting field operations, conducting inspections, assisting with reporting, and helping drive consistency in EH&S practices across Corporate, Operations, Site Services, and Engineering functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Safety, or a related field preferred
  • 2–3 years of experience in EH&S, safety, or environmental compliance
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and applicable state regulations
  • Experience supporting field operations or working in industrial, construction, or water/wastewater environments preferred
  • Ability to perform field-based safety inspections, including use of PPE, climbing, walking uneven terrain, and accessing active work sites
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation, administration, and ongoing improvement of EH&S programs, policies, and procedures across all locations.
  • Communicate, distribute, and help enforce company and site-specific safety procedures in alignment with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain working knowledge of OSHA and other applicable regulations; assist with updates and communication of new or revised standards.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical inventories, and ensure proper HMIS classifications.
  • Serve as a liaison for third-party compliance platforms and vendors (e.g., ISN, Avetta, Highwire/ConstructSecure).
  • Track EH&S performance metrics and assist in meeting company safety goals and targets.
  • Conduct and assist with facility inspections, audits, and site visits to identify unsafe conditions and work practices.
  • Prepare inspection reports, track corrective actions, and follow through to closure.
  • Review Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), identify hazards, assess risk, and support updates to SOPs.
  • Ensure employees and supervisors report unsafe conditions and coordinate timely corrective actions.
  • Monitor company GPS/telematics systems and investigate alerts to help reduce vehicle incidents and losses.
  • Assist with incident investigations, including gathering information, documenting findings, and supporting root cause analysis.
  • Ensure timely reporting of all injuries, incidents, and near misses; track and help close out corrective actions.
  • Support administration of workers’ compensation claims and coordinate with insurance carriers.
  • Assist with return-to-work programs, including coordinating modified duty assignments.
  • Communicate loss prevention efforts and program status to management.
  • Prepare and submit required environmental and regulatory reports, including customer Right-to-Know (RTK/CRTK), and other federal, state, and local filings.
  • Compile and maintain OSHA 300 logs and other required safety and labor statistics.
  • Consolidate monthly, quarterly, and annual EH&S reports and metrics for management review.
  • Support environmental compliance reporting related to water, wastewater, and air requirements.
  • Coordinate, deliver, and document employee safety training, including new hire orientation and recurring training programs.
  • Monitor and track internal and third-party training completion and compliance.
  • Coordinate and document safety meetings covering employee safety, vehicle safety, and operational risks.
  • Promote safety awareness and reinforce safe work practices across all levels of the organization.
  • Support construction and operational safety efforts by providing field-level EH&S guidance.
  • Assist teams in identifying hazards and implementing safe work practices across job sites and facilities.
  • Travel throughout the company’s service areas as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
