About The Position

The EH&S Area Specialist provides strategic and hands-on leadership for Boulder, Westminster, and Fort Collins. Partnering with site leaders and Global EHS, the role protects people, animals, the environment, property, and business continuity while enabling compliant, reliable research operations. The role is responsible for owning and administering the regional EHS compliance strategy, designing, implementing, and evaluating systems for procedures, compliance calendars, permits, records, audits, and performance reporting. It also directs investigations of significant or complex events, provides EHS guidance on occupational-health coordination, return-to-work matters, and emergency preparedness, and serves as the regional subject-matter owner for environmental permits and programs. Additionally, the specialist provides professional EHS consultation for chemical, biological, animal, ergonomic, PPE, and exposure-control risks, establishes EHS expectations for high-risk contractor work, and determines regional training priorities and competency needs. The role also establishes and standardizes core EHS processes across the three Colorado locations, develops and owns regional EHS procedures and improvement plans, and aligns site practices with corporate expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, Life Sciences, or related discipline.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and directly relevant experience may be considered in accordance with company policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-site EHS responsibility within laboratory, vivarium, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, CRO, research, warehouse, or similarly regulated operations.
  • Experience with federal OSHA, EPA/CDPHE environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, incident investigation, contractor safety, and emergency management.
  • Experience supporting AAALAC-accredited or GLP-regulated operations and multinational organizations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the regional EHS advisor to site leadership for Boulder, Westminster, and Fort Collins.
  • Independently evaluate significant EHS risks, interpret regulatory and company requirements, establish priorities, and recommend practical actions that support compliant and reliable operations.
  • Build trusted relationships, coach leaders, and use risk and performance data to influence decisions and accountability.
  • Own and administer the regional EHS compliance strategy.
  • Analyze applicable legal and company requirements, determine their operational impact, and exercise professional judgment in selecting controls, priorities, and escalation paths for significant risks.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate systems for procedures, compliance calendars, permits, records, audits, and performance reporting.
  • Assess trends and control effectiveness, identify material gaps, and advise leadership on corrective strategies and resource needs.
  • Direct investigations of significant or complex events; determine root and contributing causes; recommend corrective and preventive actions; and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Provide EHS guidance on occupational-health coordination, return-to-work matters, and emergency preparedness while partnering with Human Resources, Operations, and other responsible functions.
  • Serve as the regional subject-matter owner for environmental permits and programs.
  • Interpret requirements, determine compliance approaches, advise leaders on material environmental risks, and develop initiatives supporting waste reduction, resource conservation, and ESG data integrity.
  • Provide professional EHS consultation for chemical, biological, animal, ergonomic, PPE, and exposure-control risks.
  • Evaluate non-routine work and proposed controls, resolve complex compliance questions, and advise operational leaders in support of GLP and AAALAC requirements.
  • Establish EHS expectations for high-risk contractor work and independently assess projects, equipment, materials, and process changes before startup.
  • Identify unacceptable risk, require appropriate controls, and elevate significant business or compliance concerns to the accountable leader.
  • Determine regional training priorities and competency needs; develop or select appropriate content and delivery methods; and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Advise site leaders on engagement strategies that strengthen employee participation, reporting, and positive recognition.
  • Establish and standardize core EHS processes across the three Colorado locations.
  • Develop and own regional EHS procedures and improvement plans, align site practices with corporate expectations, coach leaders, and monitor accountability for timely and effective risk reduction.
  • Exercise authority to stop work presenting imminent danger, suspend unsafe contractor activity, and remove unsafe equipment from service.
  • Determine when unresolved or material risks require escalation; recommend corrective-action priorities, capital investments, and other risk-treatment options.
  • Provide professional input regarding EHS budgets, procurement decisions, vendor selection, and vendor performance.
