EDUCATOR STERILE PROCESSING
About The Position
This role is responsible for promoting and supporting an environment conducive to staff growth, development, and autonomy within the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). The Educator will coordinate and implement the SPD orientation program, provide competency-based education, and foster ongoing professional development for associates. They will also develop, monitor, and evaluate the role of unit-based preceptors. The Educator will orient new associates to department policies, procedures, and specific SPD functions, including Decontamination, Instrument Assembly, Sterilization, Case Cart Assembly, and Equipment handling. Additionally, the Educator will demonstrate, explain, and monitor the activities of new orientees and personnel seeking advancement. In collaboration with the manager, this role manages processes that support patient care delivery to optimize patient outcomes, customer satisfaction, and resource management. This includes communicating changes in practice, monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements, serving as a clinical resource and mentor, and monitoring customer satisfaction. The Educator will also participate in goal setting and process improvement initiatives and support affiliated schools. The role also involves staying current on sterilization standards, participating in professional growth activities, partnering with Infection Control, and promoting staff certification. The Educator will perform all SPD Tech I and II accountabilities when assigned and act as a resource on instrument identification, use, location, and availability.
Requirements
- 3+ years Surgical environment experience
- 1+ years teaching or supervisory experience pref.
- Good working knowledge of computer programs, specifically Microsoft Office, e-mail and hand held technology.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to lift/and or move surgical instrument trays 30-40 lbs.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints and in difficult situations.
- Exposed to hazardous materials and blood-borne pathogens.
- Ability to prioritize independently and respond to multiple simultaneous requests.

- CSPDT, CST preferred.
- CSPDT, CST preferred with current Professional State Licensure under IDFPR.
Responsibilities

- Explain job activities and tasks relative to each position.
- Orient associates to specific SPD functions: Decontamination Instrument Assembly Sterilization Case Cart Assembly Equipment handling.
- Demonstrates, explains and monitors the activities of new orientees or personnel seeking advancement to next technical level.
- Monitors associate engagement and addresses issues or concerns to assure resolution.
- Communicates changes in practice and ensures changes are incorporated into daily activities.
- Monitors and evaluates unit compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
- Assumes responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor, in conjunction with the manager.
- Serves as a clinical resource and mentor for staff.
- Monitors customer satisfaction in collaboration with the manager.
- In conjunction with manager, participates in goal setting and process improvement initiatives.
- Supports and serves as resource to affiliated schools.
- Stays current on sterilization standards via literature, education events, internal and external resources, and networking.
- Participates in activities to enhance professional growth, such as involvement in professional organizations and continuing education.
- Partners with Infection Control to assure alignment.
- Promote staff certification.
- Performs all SPD Tech I and II accountabilities when assigned.
- Acts as a resource on instrument identification, appropriate use, location and availability.
