About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Department Chair and Department Associate Chair, this role administers and implements all operational aspects of the Information Computer Sciences graduate programs. It acts as an industry liaison for ongoing internships, outreach programs, competitions, capstone events, career fair activities, and other external opportunities in coordination with department leadership. The specialist works with industry partners to establish and maintain professional programs and collaborates with student organizations on activities involving corporate partners and external relationships. A key responsibility includes designing assessment studies in collaboration with the Department Chair, conducting research, and analyzing data to evaluate learning outcomes for graduate and undergraduate courses and programs by monitoring key benchmarks. This role also works with graduate programs' chairs and the College of Natural Sciences Administrative Services Office on personnel transactions, including hiring graduate students for teaching assistantships. The Educational Specialist serves as the graduate program coordinator for the Information and Computer Sciences Department, is responsible for documenting graduate student academic progress, and expedites follow-up actions with participants and other campus units. They assist graduate program chairs in reviewing and overseeing the processing of graduate student applications and instruct Graduate Admissions Committees on policies and rules for admissions. The specialist participates in new student orientation, determines the eligibility of graduate students applying for teaching assistantships, and assists with recruitment for donor-sponsored graduate assistant fellowships. Collaboration with faculty, chairs, and the College of Natural Sciences Administrative Services Office is required for grant proposal submissions. The role is responsible for communications with current and prospective graduate students by administering and updating departmental list servers, department news, and web pages. Additionally, the specialist monitors, implements, and updates electronic databases to record and track relevant graduate student information, interprets, develops, implements, reviews, and may modify policies and procedures to ensure compliance, and establishes and maintains positive working relationships within the UH system to accomplish these duties. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in arts, social science, arts and humanities, science, education, business or related field.
  • 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for program coordination, project management, and/or academic support in higher education.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of academic program support in higher education.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with academic program in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters' degree in education or sciences.
  • Experience in the preparation of reports for the purposes of accreditation or student assessment in the academic setting.
  • Knowledge of local IT, software, and other computer-related industries.
  • Prior experience working in IT, software, or other computer-related industries.
  • Working knowledge of higher educational institutions procedures and/or relevant programs in support of higher education, such as BANNER or STAR (registration and advising), or Kuali (purchasing and procurement).
  • Experience with grant proposal submissions.
  • Familiarity with academic procedures and policies at higher educational institutions with undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
  • Working knowledge of web-based tools (e.g. web page design, social media).
  • Familiarity with Information & Computer Sciences undergraduate and/or graduate curriculum.
